By Eduard Gismatullin – Nov 13, 2013 7:51 AM GMT

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) and Tullow Oil Plc failed to find oil or natural gas in their last planned exploration well off French Guiana, a partner said.

The companies drilled the GM-ES-5 well to a total depth of 6,460 meters (21,200 feet), Northern Petroleum Plc (NOP) said today in a statement. The well will be plugged and abandoned.

“Reservoir sequences were encountered as expected but with no evidence of hydrocarbons,” Northern Petroleum said. “Once the drill ship, the Stena ICEMax, has completed the abandonment operations it will move to a location outside French Guiana.” read more

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) is gearing up to sell about $15 billion of assets as Europe’s largest oil company accelerates disposals to offset the cost of projects from Australia to Canada.

Asset sales will allow Shell’s net capital investment, spending on projects adjusted for acquisitions and disposals, to fall from this year’s record $45 billion, Chief Executive Officer Peter Voser said in an interview. A raft of new projects coming on stream gives room to sell oil and natural gas fields, he said. read more

Arrow LNG a likely target in Shell spending rethink

The Arrow gas export project in Australia is a likely casualty of a tighter spending regime at Royal Dutch/Shell as the company’s new boss considers feeding output earmarked for it into a rival plant instead.

LONDON Tue Nov 12, 2013 2:56pm GMT

(Reuters) – The Arrow gas export project in Australia is a likely casualty of a tighter spending regime at Royal Dutch/Shell (RDSa.L) as the company’s new boss considers feeding output earmarked for it into a rival plant instead.

Industry sources say the move could be among the first actions of Ben van Beurden. He inherits a recent promise to invest with care when he takes over as chief executive on January 1, and is due to outline his strategy on March 13. read more

United States District Court, S.D. Texas.

November 22, 2013.

Opinion on Summary Judgment

LYNN N. HUGHES, District Judge.

1. Introduction.

Beginning in 1998, James G. Wood told Shell Oil Company about designs to use smaller-diameter equipment for drilling in deep water. In 2004, the United States Patent Office awarded Peter Azancot a patent on drilling a small-bore well in deep water. Wood asserts that he is the sole inventor of the technology in Azancot’s patent. Shell responds that both Wood’s delay in bringing this claim and having brought other suits against Shell preclude his claim for inventorship. Shell will prevail. read more

The struggle continues, 18 years after the death of Ken Saro-Wiwa

Ken and the rest of the Ogoni 9 were murdered for standing up to Shell. But they were part of a movement that ultimately achieved a spectacular result: Shell was forced to leave Ogoniland. And,  despite Shell’s efforts, popular protest has prevented it from ever returning. Since then, we have served as an inspiration to communities all around the world who are resisting multinational companies.

By Celestine AkpoBari

November 10 marked the 18th anniversary of the state execution of writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and the ‘Ogoni 9’.

Not long ago, the Governor of our state in Nigeria said to the Ogonis: ‘Why can’t you people move on?’ The simple answer is that since Ken’s death in 1995 nothing has been done to stop the devastation brought about by unwanted, dirty oil extraction in our homeland.

In the 1950s, before Nigeria won independence, Shell was given the right to drill oil. Ken Saro-Wiwa, like me, was from Ogoniland, an area of the Niger Delta which, like many others, was destroyed by the reckless exploitation of international oil companies, in particular Shell. Saro-Wiwa’s tireless campaigning let the international community know about our struggle – the conflict, pollution, loss of livelihood, food and drinking water. Ken also gave us hope by inspiring us to mobilize against the military government and Shell. read more

How Shell exploited the tragedy that befell a filling station franchisee

Jochen Colleen tragically killed in a road accident

Jochen Piehl tragically killed in a road accident

Against their wishes, Shell sent another franchise owner to stand in for them supposedly on a temporary basis, then refused to allow them to return. Shell’s alleged treachery ruined the family financially making the situation even more distressing at the worst possible time. Colleen says: “We were so lost and weak and broken with our son’s death that we could not even put up a ‘fight’ at the time.” Her damming assessment of the oil giant: “Shell have no morals or scruples and don’t care how and who they destroy.”

Over a decade ago, Frank and Colleen Piehl were the first tenants of the Shell owned Sibonelo filling station based at Ngwenya, Swaziland at the Oshoek border post of South Africa (Oshoek) and Swaziland.

The family mortgaged their home and invested their life savings into what was becoming a thriving business, despite unusual onerous terms attached to the lease arising from an interest held by a consortium of landowners.

In 2001, their only son, Jochen, was killed in a road accident at the age of 13. read more

Shell May Drill $200 Million Well Off South Africa Next Year

Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 15.08.50 By Paul Burkhardt – Nov 6, 2013 8:31 AM GMT

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA), Europe’s largest oil producer, may drill off South Africa’s northwest coast next year after studying geological data from the area.

The company based in The Hague, acquired 8,000 square kilometers (3,088 square miles) of 3-D seismic data of the Orange Basin, Shell South Africa General Manager Jan Willem Eggink said in an interview in Johannesburg yesterday. The information is being processed and should be ready by December, he said.

Shell has started an environmental impact study “so that if we will go ahead to drill a well we will be ready,” he said. The timing of a prospect well would be due to rig availability and the weather window, Eggink said. The cost of each well would be $150 million to $200 million because of the deep water. read more

ABUJA, Nigeria, Nov. 4 (UPI) — A Shell subsidiary in Nigeria said it’s considering giving up its stake in a 60-mile oil pipeline in the Niger Delta because of thefts and sabotage.Shell Petroleum Development Co. said it may sell its claim to the Nembe Creek Trunkline, the Nigerian newspaper ThisDay reported Monday. The decision, the newspaper reported, comes three years after the company spent $1.1 billion on pipeline overhauls.

The trunkline and the region’s Trans-Niger oil pipeline are used for the delivery of an estimated 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day from oil fields in the Niger Delta.

In July, the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative estimated Nigeria lost $10.9 billion in oil revenue to theft and sabotage from 2009-11.

The government has blamed instability in the Niger Delta for its failure to meet a 2013 production target of 2.53 million barrels of oil per day.

Royal Dutch Shell has repeatedly said it was unable to fulfill its contractual obligations in Nigeria because of issues involving militants who who, in some cases, drill holes into pipelines, causing environmental damage. read more

Shell plants LNG at truck stops along the interstates: Kemp

In the decade to 2013, shale gas and oil transformed the U.S. and global energy markets. The next revolutionary development over the decade to 2023 is likely to be the widespread use of gas as a transport fuel, starting in the United States. Freight trucks powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) rather than diesel could become a common sight on the U.S. interstate highway system under plans being developed and financed by Royal Dutch Shell.

Minister Pat Rabbitte said the representative did not require access to the tunnel to complete the task he was sent to do, which was not health and safety related.

A CONSULTANT EXPERT for the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources did not have sufficient training at the time of a site assessment at the Corrib gas pipeline to view a tunnel in which a worker died just weeks later, it has emerged.

In early September the German man in his 20s died after suffering head injuries while working as part of the maintenance support crew at the site in Mayo.

His sustained his injuries when a compressed air-pipe attached to the tunnel boring machine exploded. It has now emerged that a representative from Environ, the independent consultants appointed by the department to assist in monitoring conditions of consent to construct the Corrib gas pipeline, conducted a visit on 2 and 3 July this year. read more

Shell has that haunted look

THE TIMES: 1 November 2013

It is almost a decade since the reserves scandal exposed the old stock market adage “Never Sell Shell” as being rather less than failsafe. Yesterday’s results statement, appropriately scary for Hallowe’en, reinforced that, with third quarter earnings coming in a fifth lighter than the market was expecting for a second consecutive quarter. This was thanks to a witches’ brew that included weaker refining margins, disruptions in Nigeria and higher production costs.  Shell’s biggest offence, in the eyes of investors, appears to be that… read more

Shell vowed to press on with its controversial Arctic drilling plans, despite a warning that charges linked to the project would weigh on its already weak profits.

Pre-tax earnings slipped by 31 per cent to £2.65billion in the third quarter, amid rock bottom refining margins and a fresh charge on its troubled Nigerian operation.

Finance director Simon Henry warned the firm was also likely to take a £125million charge in the fourth quarter on its stalled quest to find oil in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas off Alaska. Shell’s Kulluk drilling rig ran aground in stormy seas on New Year’s Eve, putting its Arctic plans on ice indefinitely. read more

Shell – when size becomes a problem

FINANCIAL TIMES

The company looks lost, a lumbering dinosaur in a world where the prizes go to the quick and nimble. There is something wrong with a company that can throw away $6bn of shareholder funds in exploring the Arctic – with nothing to show for it. Empires never last, but in trying to last they lose their way and in the commercial world they destroy value. Shell should think radically and remember that what really matters is performance, not size. read more

Woeful warm-up sets up Van Beurden to shine at Shell

FINANCIAL TIMES

A support act that blows the headliner off the stage may not get another gig. Little danger of that for Shell finance director Simon Henry. The third-quarter results he presented yesterday went down like a Morris dancing set at a heavy metal festival. Ben van Beurden, the incoming chief executive, can only do better…

Shell’s Arctic costs spiral as it admits damaged Kulluk rig may be written off

Screen Shot 2013-01-11 at 20.09.51Energy giant hopes to resume controversial Arctic drilling in 2014 if authorities allow, but rig damage forces change of plans. The Kulluk rig ran aground in stormy weather on New Year’s Eve, in a major reputational blow for Shell.

Royal Dutch Shell has warned is likely to book a $200m impairment charge of in the fourth quarter of 2013 because its Kulluk rig, which ran aground off Alaska last year, may be too expensive to repair.

The company has spent more than $5bn on its controversial oil exploration campaign without yet being able to drill into potentially oil-bearing rocks. It has spent close to $1bn this year alone.

Shell said it was still hoping to resume work in the Arctic in 2014 but said any drilling next year would now focus on the Chukchi Sea rather than the Beaufort, which is shallower and required a rig of the Kulluk’s specification. read more

By 7:40AM GMT 31 Oct 2013

Royal Dutch Shell blamed weak refining margins across the industry and the deteriorated security situation in Nigeria for 31pc drop in third-quarter profits, to $4.25bn.

The results were significantly worse than analysts had forecast, with profits excluding the impact of one-off items Shell’s profits down 32pc, to $4.46bn, against forecasts of between $4.9bn and $5.1bn.

Shell shares dropped 4pc in early trading.

Shell said it took a $300m hit from the impact of the widespread oil theft and ensuing disruption it is battling in the Niger Delta, as well as the blockade of the Nigeria LNG plant. Production from Nigeria was 65,000 barrels of oil and gas a day lower than in the same period of 2012. read more
