After a break of almost two months, work restarted yesterday on the ¤68 million tunnel to bring natural gas inland to the Corrib gas refinery at Bellanaboy in north Mayo.
The giant tunnel boring machine Fionnuala had been idle since September 8th when a German worker, Lars Wagner (26), a mechanical fitter, was killed on the site.
All operations were suspended on the 4.9km (three mile) tunnel as safety checks were carried out. Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority launched separate investigations.
Mr Wagner was from the Offenburg area, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. He was one of several German personnel working on the tunnel which is a joint venture project between BAM Civil and Wayss & Freytag, both of which are subsidiaries of the Royal BAM Group.
The tunnelling teams, who work in shifts, had been on paid leave since the accident.

The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
