By Eric Martin, Carlos Manuel Rodriguez and Helder Marinho: June 18, 2013

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said he’s confident Congress will end the state oil monopoly this year, opening the way for companies such as Exxon Mobil Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) to tap the nation’s reserves.

In the model envisioned by Pena Nieto, state-owned Petroleos Mexicanos would develop some fields, while others are tapped by foreign and private companies. He declined to discuss more details of the proposal, or whether it would require a change in the constitution. read more

Carson wants Shell to hurry cleanup of Carousel tract contamination

Screen Shot 2013-06-18 at 08.07.19

The City Council Tuesday night will discuss issuing a letter opposing Shell Oil’s initial cleanup plans for the Carousel tract neighborhood, which was contaminated by a former oil tank farm that occupied the 50-acre area until the 1960s.

Shell has been preparing a plan, under the supervision of the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board, for about five years. A specific plan, now in its final stages, calls for digging up contaminated soil, cleaning it, and replacing it with fresh soil in the 285-home development. But council members said Shell Oil is not working quickly enough considering residents face health concerns. read more

How Shell is trying to send a chill through activist groups across the country

Screen Shot 2013-06-18 at 07.35.35If the court rules in Shell’s favor, it would have a profound chilling effect on First Amendment rights across the country. Nothing would stop other corporations from taking similar preemptive legal action against anyone they deem to be likely protesters. This case isn’t just about the fate of the Arctic. It is about the state of our democracy.

One of our most important rights as Americans is the freedom to express ourselves. This takes the form of voting, it takes the form of activism, and it takes the form of our First Amendment right to free speech.

This summer, the 9th Circuit Court in California is weighing the question of whether companies have the right to take preemptive legal action against peaceful protesters for hypothetical future protests. This will be an extraordinary decision that could have a significant impact on every American’s First Amendment rights. read more

Whether the UK can get shale gas flowing as fast as the US has remains in doubt, but Centrica seems ready to give it a try

The Observer,

Expect to see more big names from the oil industry, such as Shell, ExxonMobil and Statoil, moving into the British shale sector now that one of their competitors – Centrica – has taken the plunge. The international companies have always taken a keen interest in the UK fracking scene, despite endless statements from their chief executives that there are better prospects in China and elsewhere.

There is some speculation this weekend that the reason Centrica paid a fairly toppy price for the stake in the Bowland Shale licence from Cuadrilla Resources was because it faced competition from Shell and others. read more

Safe sex in Nigeria

Screen Shot 2013-04-20 at 08.36.20

Tom Mayne of Global Witness, an NGO, has followed the case closely; he believes things were structured this way so that Shell and ENI could obscure their deal with Malabu by inserting a layer between them. Mr Agaev, Malabu’s former fixer, lends weight to this interpretation. It was, he says, structured to be a “safe-sex transaction”, with the government acting as a “condom” between the buyers and seller.

Court documents shed light on the manoeuvrings of Shell and ENI to win a huge Nigerian oil block and on the dilemmas of their industry

Jun 15th 2013

DEALS for oilfields can be as opaque as the stuff that is pumped from them. But when partners fall out and go to court, light is sometimes shed on the bargaining process—and what it exposes is not always pretty. That is certainly true in the tangled case of OPL245, a massive Nigerian offshore block with as much as 9 billion barrels of oil—enough to keep all of Africa supplied for seven years.

After years of legal tussles, in 2011 Shell, in partnership with ENI of Italy, paid a total of $1.3 billion for the block. The Nigerian government acted as a conduit for directing most of that money to the block’s original owner, a shadowy local company called Malabu Oil and Gas. Two middlemen hired by Malabu, one Nigerian, one Azerbaijani, then sued the firm separately in London—in the High Court and in an arbitration tribunal, respectively—claiming unpaid fees for brokering the deal. read more

New oil licenses fuel Barents battle

Screen Shot 2013-06-13 at 16.46.31

June 13, 2013

Oil & Energy Minister Ola Borten Moe splashed more oil on the simmering battle over the Barents Sea this week when he announced the award of 20 new oil production licenses in the area. He also awarded four more in the Norwegian Sea, and environmentalists were not pleased.

Some of the bullish Norwegian oil minister’s awards allow oil companies to venture closer to the sensitive Arctic waters around Svalbard, and that’s a highly controversial move. Oil companies won permission to look for new sources of oil and gas above 74-degrees latitude and not only environmental groups have been opposed to that. Newspaper Aftenposten noted that countries including Great Britain and Russia have erlier expressed that a border in principle runs along the 74-degree mark. Areas beyond that are in the so-called “Svalbard box” which they don’t think Norway has the right to manage alone. read more

“It is important to bear in mind that this is an ongoing investigation into the facts and potential evidence, and it could be a number of years before it concludes,” a Shell spokesperson told City A.M. via email.

Oil giant Shell, along with BP, Statoil, ENI and price reporting agency Platts, all confirmed last month that they are under investigation by the EC. read more

Shell steps on the natural gas

For the first time more than half the energy giant’s profits have not come from oil. The shift reflects a gas revolution

Danny Fortson Published: 9 June 2013

Three months ago at a shipyard in Rotterdam, Daniela Voser, the wife of Shell’s chief executive, smashed a champagne bottle on the hull of a river barge.

The Greenstream lacks the grandeur of a cruise ship, but its launch was notable nonetheless. It is the first vessel built to run on liquefied natural gas. It produces a quarter of the carbon dioxide and a fifth of the nitrous oxide typically emitted from barges powered by fuel oil.

The gas powers electric engines, which means the boat is much less noisy, too. The Greenstream is the Toyota Prius of marine transport. read more

Two weeks of U.S. Coast Guard hearings on the grounding of Shell’s drill rig Kulluk concluded May 30. A report on conclusions of the inquiry is due in early July, but that deadline may be extended, Coast Guard Lt. Commander Brian McNamara said.

Coast Guard officials are probing Shell’s decisions and risk analysis in sending the drill rig across the Gulf of Alaska under tow during the winter, and whether the proper tugs and tow equipment were used. read more

In the new Shell to lie is acceptable unless your found out

Screen Shot 2013-05-21 at 23.30.59The crisis in my book, and we are far from the endpoint in this, is that RDS officials lied in that the decision to move Kulluk was not related to tax avoidance when it was.  Perhaps that is why the RDS CEO has taken a closer interest in his family and the sustainability of his future.

In the new Shell, that which developed in the days of post transformation, group dancing in that nice hotel near the Het Loo Palace, with the dear leader Watts arriving from space etc around the same time, who can forget those heady days.  Is that when to lie and deceive became the norm in the head sheds of The Hague. BG Group CEO Chris Finlayson, past indiscretions at Shell

In summary, Finlayson (right) sees himself as a victim to the goings-on in 1999, just one of many victims in the then Shell Expro, described in our Audit notes as a hostile environment of extreme denial.  I can concur that Chris was a victim, when for example he made light of the Touch F-All scandal in various press statements of which there is an audio record he did so because his Brent Field Manager Jorn Berget misled him.  He soon realised this but despite many attempts by me and his Internal Audit Manager he would not retract the statement.  In fear, no doubt for his job, his future promotion prospects etc, and led by the ear by his mentor and boss Malcolm Brinded he toed the line. read more

Hello John

You may want to keep an eye on this latest development in relation to the Shell Dutch Pension Fund.

Your website was involved in breaking news about the recovery plan for the pension fund after a financial meltdown a few years ago.

Shell Netherlands is on a warpath with the staffcouncil. They want to introduce a new pension system (for new staff) which is much less favorable for the employees.

It will be done. But the Staffcouncil is against. Drama will develop, all in dutch of course. Start is 1st July. read more

Looking for lessons in Shell’s disastrous campaign to drill offshore in the Arctic, the Interior Department on Thursday launched an effort to create special rules for oil and gas activity in federal waters off Alaska’s coasts.

Leading the hearing was a former Alaskan who’s risen into the top echelons of the department. Tommy Beaudreau, an assistant secretary at Interior who oversees energy development in the U.S. offshore, said his years in Alaska have left him mindful of the promise of resource development and the dangers it presents. read more

Interior official hears wide range of views on oil drilling in Arctic

— [email protected]: Published: June 6, 2013

Anchorage — Against the backdrop of Royal Dutch Shell’s troubled 2012 attempt to drill in the Arctic Ocean, a top Interior official — and former Alaskan — heard the gamut of views Thursday about whether and how oil companies can safely drill offshore in the Alaska Arctic.

No drilling at all, said the Sierra Club.

Clear and consistent standards, said the oil companies and industry groups.

The Department of the Interior for the first time is crafting specific rules for oil and gas exploration and production offshore in the Arctic. While Shell was operating under special conditions, such as a ban on drilling into oil-rich zones without a spill containment system, those requirements don’t automatically extend to other oil companies. read more

Shell’s claimed high level of drilling expertise – absolute phooey?

EXPERT COMMENT RECEIVED FROM A SHELL RELATED SOURCE

John

It amuses me to read articles in the press about Shell’s high level of drilling expertise – typical comments regarding Alaska are along the lines of “if Shell cannot do it then nobody can…”

I’m sorry, but this is a very long way off the mark. Until the 1990s Shell trained and maintained a large international drilling group, whose expertise was unquestionably of the highest standard. For the past 20 years this has not been the case.

In the 1990s it was decided that drilling was not a core business, and was better left to sub-contractors, following the example of BP. This was seen as an efficient way to reduce drilling costs, as many of the overheads could be transferred to the sub-contractors. It also meant that the recruiting and technical development of drilling staff, which had involved sending engineering graduates to the well site to learn about and then supervise drilling operations, effectively came to an end. read more

INGLESIDE — Royal Dutch Shell is about to move a mountain, towing its new state-of-the-art Olympus platform for duty in the Gulf of Mexico’s deep water.

The Olympus, designed to operate in water depths of 3,000 to 5,000 feet, will be Shell’s sixth tension leg platform in the Gulf. The company escorted a group of journalists on a tour of the platform Wednesday.

The platform — towering 406 feet from the base of the hull to the top of the derrick — is docked at the Ingleside, Texas shipyard near Corpus Christi and will leave in about a month to work at the Mars B project 130 miles south of New Orleans. Earlier this year, the hull made an 18,000-mile, two-month trek from South Korea to Ingleside. read more

OGONI PRESS RELEASE: WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2013

Screen Shot 2013-06-06 at 09.18.05As we mark the world’s Environment Day on June 5, the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) calls for urgent action to save the Ogoni people and its environment.

MOSOP is deeply concerned about the threat to Ogoni survival posed by the failure of government and Shell to clean the Ogoni environment which had been devastated by long years of oil mining activities in the area.

MOSOP shares the concern of Nigerians about the country’s non-commitment to human rights as a major set-back to a healthy environment. MOSOP urges Nigeria to improve its human rights records and allow people to live, work and enjoy the peace that comes with fundamental freedom and respect for humanity and the environment. read more

Shell CEO Calls for Europe Carbon Reduction Target Extension

Screen Shot 2013-01-06 at 16.33.31

Royal Dutch Shell Plc Chief Executive Officer Peter Voser said Europe needs to extend its targets for curbing greenhouse gases and promoting renewable energy by a decade through 2030.

“To actually change things you need time and we are a little bit concerned if you have a short-term target,” Voser told reporters today in London. “We favor one target, which sets action with greenhouse gas.”

The European Union has a binding target to cut greenhouse gases by 20 percent compared with 1990 levels, increase the share of renewable energy to an average of 20 percent and a goal of boosting energy efficiency by one-fifth in 2020. The European Commission said in March a framework for the decade after 2020 is needed to give investors legal certainty, spur innovation and prepare for a global climate deal. read more

The Argument Against Oil Drilling in Arctic Seas

The panel heard about busted shackles lost at sea. Snapped towlines. Fuel injectors clogged with slime. Forty-foot seas. And harrowing rescue attempts by Coast Guard helicopters to pluck Kulluk crewmembers from a deck that pitched and rolled with each wave. Shell’s Alaska operations manager even admitted the Kulluk left port in Dutch Harbor during the stormiest time of year to avoid paying state taxes, calling into question earlier statements from the same official.

The Natural Resources Defense Council has issued a statement concluding that recent events — most notably the grounding of a Shell Oil drilling rig in Alaska — show the oil industry is not ready to safely, cleanly drill offshore in the Arctic.

I agree. There’s no logic for pushing fossil-fuel frontiers this extreme while neglecting energy-efficiency measures at home.

Here’s the group’s argument, which builds on its earlier, and justified, criticism of President Obama’s vague new “National Strategy for the Arctic Region”: read more

Shell’s Peter Voser: we have ‘nothing to hide’ on oil pricing

Royal Dutch Shell, one of the energy giants under investigation for suspected oil price rigging, has “nothing to hide”, its chief executive Peter Voser has said.

European Commission investigators raided Shell’s offices last month on suspicion the oil major could have colluded with BP and Norway’s Statoil to manipulate the price-reporting process for more than a decade.

“The investigation is ongoing and we are co-operating. It is for the European Commission to find evidence and facts at this stage,” Mr Voser said, declining to comment on details of the investigation.

But he added: “Transparency is a key word. It’s not just on pricing side, it is on taxation and in general how we do business. Shell has always been at the forefront of driving transparency. We have nothing to hide. read more

How Shell collaborated in the Nazi annexation of Austria and Czechoslovakia

Screen Shot 2013-06-05 at 00.15.01

From time to time we like to highlight events from the long often-dark history of Royal Dutch Shell.

We have previously published evidence that Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis.

This article reveals how Shell collaborated in the Nazi annexation of Austria and Czechoslovakia in the run up years to World War 2.

Royal Dutch Shell and its long-term leader, Sir Henri Deterding, who became an ardent Nazi, had a close relationship with Adolf Hitler and his henchmen. Deterding was the subject of gushing praise by Hitler. read more

Peter Voser and the UBS scandals

Voser was said to have provided significant input to the stabilization of the scandal ridden Swiss bank. Ironic spin given that the Swiss Justice Minister warned only months later that UBS was in danger of collapse. It actually has a reputation riddled with more holes than Swiss cheese.

The Sunday Times reported at the weekend (page 2 of the Business Section) that UBS, the Swiss bank, is being investigated by French authorities regarding allegations that it helped wealthy clients to evade tax.

Extract

“Investigators are looking into claims that UBS advisers tried to coax French customers to move cash to Switzerland to sidestep the taxman between 2002 and 2007.”

From April 2005 to April 2010 the current Chief Executive Officer of Royal Dutch Shell Plc, the Swiss national, Mr. Peter Voser, served on the Board of Directors of the Swiss bank UBS AG. He was a member of the governance and nominating committee and of the strategy committee. He was well paid. For example, in the year 2008/2009, Voser received over $1 million USD (in Swiss francs) from UBS in “compensation” and shares.

Shell company DNA: price-rigging, tax dodging, flawed wonder fuels and a cover-up culture

It seems that it is not only price-rigging that is in the DNA of Royal Dutch Shell, but also tax avoidance, flawed wonder fuels, and a cover-up mentality whenever embroiled in yet another scandal. Shell is at it again currently, having been caught red-handed in an incredible scandal coming to the boil behind the scenes and shortly to become breaking news that will further damage Shell’s already busted reputation. You could not make it up.

So what if Shell (or any other oil company) moved an oil rig for the purposes of reducing tax payments? Is that really that big a deal in the grander scheme of things? I would expect that 99% of the readers / contributors to this website make sure that they minimize their tax payments (if not then they are rather stupid). As an RDS share holder I believe their actions are absolutely correct. However, running aground was not really advantageous and only allowed tabloid websites such as this to pontificate. read more

Frantic but failed effort left Kulluk on the rocks

Screen Shot 2013-01-11 at 20.09.51Around Dec. 7, Shell made the decision to leave that month, weather permitting, Churchfield said. The timing stemmed from concerns Shell had about the prospect of millions in state property taxes that could be assessed if the Kulluk were in Alaska at the first of the year, Churchfield told the panel. But the decision to go in December put the Kulluk and Aiviq into a fierce storm.

Over nine days of testimony that wrapped up last week in Anchorage, witnesses told a Coast Guard panel investigating the Dec. 31 grounding of a Shell drilling rig about equipment failures, fuel problems and human error during the troubled voyage and frantic but failed effort to save the Kulluk. Now it will be up to the Coast Guard panel to determine just what caused the Kulluk to crash onto the rocks south of Kodiak Island.

In the hearing, part of a broader formal marine casualty investigation, boat captains, Royal Dutch Shell executives, a Coast Guard officer and others involved in the troubled tow of the Kulluk added new dimension and detail, along with informed theories, to what’s already known about the near-disaster. Some described how it could have been much worse. read more
