Former minister of petroleum, Dan Etete, has told a British High Court that he is not the owner of Malabu Oil and Gas. He also denied receiving $1.1 billion (N173 billion) transferred to Malabu by the federal government. The money was allegedly paid by oil giants, Shell and Eni on behalf of the federal government to Malabu.

Etete in a testimony he gave on a breach of contract suit brought against him over the sale of the controversial oil block OPL 245, said that he only made N37.5 billion ($250 million) working as a consultant for Malabu. read more

Shell working to extend life of declining offshore field in Brazil

Shell is hoping to extend the life of an offshore oil field in Brazil’s Campos Basin until 2021, potentially adding five years of operation and as many as 20 million more barrels, Osman Tosun, the company’s field development manager, said Friday.

Shell on Friday spudded on of four new wells planned at the mature Bijupira-Salema field in an effort to extent production, Tosun told the Brazil Offshore conference in Macae.

Industry veteran John Broadhurst has confronted three decades of oil sands challenges

John Broadhurst knows how tough it gets when you put innovation on a schedule.

After a 32-year career in which he led Shell’s entry, development and expansion into the Alberta deposits, Mr. Broadhurst, 54, vice-president heavy oil, is retiring Monday and letting others solve the next oil sands challenges.

He was one of six Royal Dutch Shell PLC employees in 1996 assigned to figure out, after two unsuccessful attempts, whether an oil sands lease owned since the 1950s could be produced economically, in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. read more

Companies await OK for seismic exploration permits

As Arctic ice quickly succumbs to summer sun, several major energy companies are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to make good use of open ocean for exploration. Shell Oil, Norwegian geoscience company TGS, and SAExploration have all submitted requests to the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management to conduct seismic exploration projects this summer.
