Lobby row: Tim Yeo committee replacement has £66,000 shares in Shell

The Liberal Democrat MP appointed to lead scrutiny of energy policy, bills and petrol prices has more than £66,000 of shares in Britain’s biggest oil company, according to parliamentary records.

Sir Robert Smith, who has declared an interest in a company linked to Royal Dutch Shell, will take over as chairman of the House of Commons energy committee on a temporary basis.

The MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine has taken on the role after Tory MP Tim Yeo said he would stand aside during an investigation into allegations he was involved in lobbying.

A Sunday newspaper recorded Mr Yeo boasting that he had coached a business associate for an appearance at the energy committee. He was also filmed suggesting he could be paid to help an energy company get access to minsters. read more

 The scandal-hit Commons energy committee whose chairman stepped aside in a lobbying row has elected an acting leader who has shares in oil firm BP.

Lib Dem MP Sir Robert Smith is to take over the energy and climate change select committee while former Tory minister Tim Yeo is investigated over claims he helped a firm he worked for prepare to appear before his committee.

But as the row over potential conflicts of interest in politics grows, it emerged Sir Robert has shares in Shell and last year received hospitality from oil company BP. read more

Unionists protest against potential loss of jobs

Hundreds of unionists gathered outside Parliament House in Perth to protest against the potential loss of jobs in the gas industry.

They have blocked all the entrances stopping MPs and staff from entering the carpark.

The Australian Metal Workers Union say a decision by Woodside and Shell to use floating LNG platforms rather than onshore gas processing hubs will cost thousands of jobs.

Woodside recently shelved plans to build a $45 billion gas hub at James Price Point, north of Broome.

It is believed the company is investigating the use of floating LNG technology to process gas from the Browse Basin. read more

New Oil Price Fixing Lawsuit Against Shell, BP and Statoil

BP Plc, Statoil and Royal Dutch Shell Plcwere named in a lawsuit accusing them of manipulating the price of North Sea Brent crude oil and futures contracts. Smith claimed the oil companies violated U.S. antitrust law and the Commodity Exchange Act. He is seeking unspecified damages, which may be tripled under antitrust law.

BP Plc (BP/), Statoil ASA and Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) were named in a lawsuit accusing them of manipulating the price of North Sea Brent crude oil and futures contracts.

Gregory Smith, a Texas trader who claims he overpaid for Brent crude oil futures, sued the oil companies in Manhattan federal court today. Smith claimed the companies intentionally reported false prices to Platts, a division of McGraw Hill Financial Inc. (MHFI), which publishes benchmark prices for the oil industry. read more

Union protests against floating LNG in WA

UNION members have protested outside Parliament House in Perth saying floating LNG projects will rob locals of jobs.

Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU) members gathered on Tuesday to voice their concerns about the vessel-based liquefied natural gas projects.

Energy giant Royal Dutch Shell is using floating LNG technology for its Prelude gas project off the West Australian coast.

And Woodside is leaning the same way, having abandoned plans for an onshore processing plant for Browse Basin gas. read more
