Thursday 13 July 2005

British oil group Shell has settled a legal action by some of its US employees, who were furious about the overstatement of its oil and gas reserves, for $90m (pounds 51m).

The American staff had Shell shares in their pension funds. Other shareholders are suing the company and separate talks to settle that action are continuing.

In the deal struck with employees’ lawyers, Shell will pay up to $1m for costs. The company has also agreed new rules for staff who are charged with looking after their pension funds, dealing with the way they are monitored and trained. read more

Greenpeace shows Shell the way forward

By Aaron Gray-Block – July 13, 2012 at 17:45

Speaking from within the headquarters of oil major Shell on Friday, the words of Greenpeace Netherlands executive director Sylvia Borren were clear:  “My first move as the new CEO of Shell is simple and effective: no drilling for oil in the pristine Arctic.”

With that, Borren had announced a new corporate strategy for Shell.

Borren, symbolically ‘replacing’ Shell chief executive Peter Voser at the helm of the company,  said Shell would end its destructive oil drilling and instead invest its billions of dollars in profits into renewable energy. read more

Shell Oil Co. gave Gov. Tom Corbett $50,000

Gas industry contributions to Pa. politicians down

July 13, 2012 11:50 AM PITTSBURGH — The gas drilling industry gave less money to Pennsylvania politicians in 2011, but it spent more on lobbyists.

Politicians received $560,800 from the industry in 2011, down from $1.6 million in 2010, Pennsylvania Common Cause said in a news release Thursday. But gas industry lobbying expendtitures rose from $4 million to $5 million during the same period.

Shell Oil Co. gave Gov. Tom Corbett $50,000 in February 2011 — just a few months before the company announced that it was considering building a huge new petrochemical plant in the region. Exxon Mobil Corp. also gave Corbett $10,000 in December.

The data also showed that at the beginning of 2011, Shell began spending about $92,000 each quarter on lobbyists. read more

Shell Seeks to Weaken Air Rules for Arctic Drilling

By JOHN M. BRODER: July 13, 2012, 2:56 pm

Shell has asked the Environmental Protection Agency to loosen air pollution requirements for its Discoverer drill rig, which is planning to begin exploratory drilling operations off the North Slope of Alaska early next month.

In its application to the agency, dated June 28, Shell said the Discoverer cannot meet the requirements for emissions of nitrogen oxide and ammonia of an air permit granted by the E.P.A. in January. The company also asked for a minor air permit modification for its Kulluk drill ship, which is also supposed to begin work in the Arctic in the coming weeks. read more

U.K. regulator, the Takeover Panel, Friday waded into the takeover battle between Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB.LN) and Thailand’s PTT Exploration & Production PCL (PTTEP.TH) over Africa-focused Cove Energy PLC (COV.LN), giving the companies a deadline of July 16 to make their final offers.

If no offer is accepted by this date, the sale of Cove will be decided by an auction on July 17, the Takeover Panel said in a statement.
