Oil divorce

The cash pile potentially could also make BP a merger/bid target again, with old sparring partners Shell a possibility.

Oil divorce

Political risk is part of what oil companies do. So it is somewhat surprising that BP’s board, chaired by keen yachtsman Carl-Henric Svanberg, has decided to cut and run from TNK-BP.

This despite the fact that it has been such a profitable asset, helping to keep the cash flowing while the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster has been playing itself out.

However, the relationship with Mikhail Fridman and the other oligarchs running AAR, BP’s Russian partner, has become toxic. The constant threat of legal action against BP is an uncertainty it could do without, and the TNK-BP relationship has proved a bar to keeping on the right side of President Putin’s autarchy and in particular Rosneft and the path to Arctic exploration.

Nigeria: Malabu Deal – Representatives to Probe FG, Shell, Agip

By Edegbe Odemwingie, 1 June 2012

In what federal lawmakers described as a “national embarrassment”, the House of Representatives yesterday launched an inquest into the role played by the federal government and two multinational oil giants (Agip and Shell) in the alleged round tripping of proceeds in the sale of the contentious OPL 245 in favour of Malabu Oil and Gas Limited.

This comes after reports fingered top presidency officials of perpetuating one of the biggest financial heists in the country’s history, following the out of court settlement between the listed parties, and the subsequent payment of $1.1 billion USD to Malabu Oil and Gas. read more

Published May 31, 2012 Associated Press

BRASILIA, Brazil –  A Brazilian court has rejected a request from prosecutors that Shell Brasil SA and chemical company BASF SA deposit $500 million into a fund for workers allegedly contaminated at an agricultural chemicals plant.

By Dan Murtaugh and Barbara J Powell – May 31, 2012 8:03 PM GMT
