Arctic offshore drilling: Is Shell really ready to handle a disaster?

SHELL OFFSHORE ARCTIC DRILLING: COMMENTS FROM A FORMER EMPLOYEE OF SHELL OIL COMPANY

John,

I have a few comments about Shell’s claim that it prepared to handle any ‘foreseeable problem/disaster’ that may befall its proposed drilling operations in the Arctic Ocean of offshore Alaska.

I would like to point out that major blowouts these days are almost always caused by some sort of preventable error/screw-up on the part of the oil company or its contractors. In fact, this has historically been the rule rather than the exception.

BP’s recent blowout in the Gulf of Mexico was completely preventable. From what I have been able to ascertain from publicly available information, it is BP (through poor technical management oversight and technical incompetence at various stages in the drill in testing of that well) that is clearly responsible for that ‘incident’. read more

Shell’s leadership develops the best people to secure global future energy

13 May, 2012

Stephan Scholz, Shell’s Vice President – Human Resources for Middle East and North Africa outlined Shell’s approach to leadership development models and transition over the past decade.

Mr. Scholz was speaking at the Kuwait Oil Company’s third Sharing Best Practices Conference which is taking place from 13th to 14th of May 2012.

As the world becomes more uncertain with significant emerging economies, future leaders will need to equip themselves with a number of leadership competences and skills to enable them to deliver their vision.

Mr. Scholz reflected on the current global environment and shared Shell leadership development model in his key note speech, and said: “Shell operates in a complex, fast-paced and networked world. Managing the global operational footprint, increasing number of Joint Ventures, and rising energy demand presents new types of challenges for leaders. The new Shell Leadership model provides a focus on the leadership qualities needed for the future. The qualities are defined by four key attributes starting with “Authenticity” to inspire professionalism and resilience, “Growth” to ensure leaders capture opportunities to generate value to the organization, “Collaboration” to build strong partnerships and “Performance” to deliver extraordinary business outcomes by investing in people so that teams are fit for the future.” read more

Environment: Shell’s readiness on Arctic drilling challenged

Environment: Shell’s readiness on Arctic drilling challenged

By Summit Voice

SUMMIT COUNTY — Environmental activists say they want Royal Dutch Shell stockholders to know about all the potential risks and liabilities associated with the company’s plans to drill for oil in the Arctic ocean.

In a letter to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Center for Biological Diversity charges that Shell may have made false and misleading statements, and omitted crucial information about its readiness to drill in the Arctic Ocean.

Considering the chain of corporate events leading up to BP’s massive oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, it’s doesn’t require a huge leap of faith to imagine that an oil company may not be completely forthright about its activities, but the environmental group even offered specific examples of Shell’s preparations for oil drilling. read more

KENAI — On a July day a decade ago, Pete Slaiby flew on a helicopter from a Royal Dutch Shell drilling rig in the North Sea back to shore. A few hours later, on an end-of-day run to pick up more Shell workers, the helicopter crashed into the ocean and killed all 11 on board. Six worked for Slaiby. Some were friends. He was with three of them their last night on Earth.

An investigation determined that it was a freak event. read more
