Royal Dutch Shell Nazis Secrets Part 7: Why does it still matter?

Royal Dutch Shell Nazi Secrets Part 7: Why does it still matter?

By John Donovan

The most important reason why it does still matter is that ordinary people, ethical investors, and relatives of victims of the Holocaust and other Nazi crimes against humanity, are entitled, on moral grounds, to be aware of this dark chapter in the history of Royal Dutch Shell, so that they can decide if they wish to hold shares in the company or purchase Shell products.

More than 65 years after the demise of Nazi Germany, the public is still horrified, yet fascinated by the evil deeds of Adolf Hitler and his equally evil henchmen. Video clips on YouTube said to glorify Nazi troops are receiving “millions of hits”.(1)Films and documentaries about the Nazis are constantly shown on TV. The 2008 movie ‘Valkyrie’,(2) with Tom Cruise in the lead role, told the true story of an attempt to assassinate Hitler. In 2009, the Daily Telegraph reported: “Adolf Hitler at the centre of Austria’s City of Culture campaign.”(3) In October 2010, the first major exhibition in Germany focused on Hitler opened in Berlin.(4)

It is appropriate to recall what Deterding’s biographer Glyn Roberts said in relation to the Royal Dutch Shell funds “placed at Hitler’s disposal…”:

“This huge subsidy came at a decisive moment in the history of the growing Nazi movement. Let there be no doubt that, had it not been found, the whole racket might have collapsed and the history of Germany and of Europe might have had a different complexion.”(5)

In other words, without the financial support of Royal Dutch Shell for the Nazis, the course of history may have been very different.

Was Shell’s conduct all those years ago just an aberration, or an indicator of a willingness to do whatever it takes, irrespective of moral and ethical considerations, to secure business objectives?

We have in fact noted a number of similarities between the modus operandiof Royal Dutch in the Deterding era and the way Shell has operated in more recent years.

SIMILARITIES

A claim to operate honestly and ethically within Business Principles

The Glyn Roberts biography of Deterding contains several references to what is described as Sir Henri’s “moralizing references to honest trading” and to “sound business principles”.(6)

These claims were made by the oil baron who built the Royal Dutch Shell group (and his vast personal fortune) on oil price fixing and cartel activity.(7) This was a man who had close relationships with leading Nazi, including Adolf Hitler, who meddled in the internal politics of other Countries and was implicated in related sinister events, including forgery, currency counterfeiting, and murder.

In more recent decades, Royal Dutch Shell has expanded its claims to the moral high ground while actually engaging in all kinds of unethical conduct, including securities fraud. Reference to Shell’s claimed business principles(8) appeared on every Form 20F Declaration that Shell filed with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission to built confidence in claimed proven hydrocarbon reserves volumes, which later turned out to be fraudulent. This resulted in dramatic news headlines,(9) fines, massive legal costs, resignations of executive directors, including the group chairman, Sir Philip Watts, and settlement of class action litigation.(10)

Price Fixing. Cartel participation

There is an abundance of evidence confirming that the Royal Dutch Shell group was built on a platform of price fixing and cartel activity(11) and that this unstated policy, which is contrary to the public interest and completely at odds with Shell’s claimed code of business ethics, continues to the present day.

Tax avoidance

The following are extracts from page 78 running on to page 79 of “PATENTS FOR HITLER”:

The story of the secret Oil International would not be complete without referring to Liechtenstein, Europe’s mystery state. Liechtenstein, with its capital, Vaduz, is the most remarkable country in war-time Europe. Situated in Central Europe, almost encircled by the Third Reich, it is the only place in the old world where people feel safe, with unprotected frontiers, with only a few policemen maintaining internal order-in short, an idyllic country. How did it escape Hitler’s armies? With a population of only 12,000, it could never have tried to defend its national existence. But we must not forget that the administration of this tiny state offered hospitality to corporations which sought a neutral centre for private empires, free from the struggle of national states and from taxation. This little country in war-torn Europe had been selected by I. G., by Standard Oil, and also by Shell as one of the centres for the super-national world empires. Its only apparent function is to enable private world empires or large corporations to escape from the risks of war and also from taxation.(12)

Tax avoidance(13) by Royal Dutch Shell involving elaborate schemes, which also continues to the present day.(14)

Trading with the enemy

There is overwhelming evidence that Royal Dutch Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis including involvement in businesses operational in Germany and a joint pre-war ambition to gain control of Russian oil fields.

While Royal Dutch Shell support for the Nazi all those years ago has no link to current Shell management, there is a link to current activities, with Shell supporting *yet another evil dictator. Access to oil and gas is the reason why Shell has signed contracts in questionable circumstances with the supposedly reformed Libyan mass murderer, Gaddafi,(15) handing over billions of dollars to a regime which may well end up funding future terrorist atrocities, as it has in the past. In addition to the bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Gaddafi was also responsible for arming the IRA, another terrorist organisation.

In 1984 police constable Yvonne Fletcher was shot dead outside the Libyan Embassy in London while policing an anti-Gaddafi protest. Machine-gun fired from within the Embassy was suspected of killing her, but Libyan diplomats asserted diplomatic immunity.

In 2010 it was reported: Tony Blair lobbied Colonel Muammar Gaddafi on behalf of Shell in a letter written for him in draft form by the oil company, documents obtained by The Times reveal.” The Daily Mail also covered the revelations in an article entitled:Shell wrote letter Tony Blair used in £325m Libyan oil deal.”

It is not long ago that Shell was funding the corrupt Nigerian dictator, General Sani Abacha,(16) during Shell’s plunder and pollution of the Niger Delta.

Basically, Shell is still willing to deal with the devil if that is what it takes to fuel its unquenchable thirst for oil, irrespective of moral considerations.

Problems with the Russians

Sir Henri was enraged when the Soviets nationalized the Baku oil fields(17) and this resulted in his campaigning against the Bolsheviks and later encouraging Hitler to attack Russia “so that Sir Henri might take over the Baku oil fields.”(18)

On page 91 of a book by Sir Henri – “An International Oilman”(19) – he recorded his disappointment at losing the Russian oil properties.

Moving fast forwardto more recent events, in 2006, the Russians forced Shell to surrender its majority stake in the worlds biggest energy project, Sakhalin II. Whistleblower information passed to the website royaldutchshellplc.com led to the Shell capitulation.(20)

Links with British Military Intelligence

Sir Henri recruited the services of the former head of British Military Intelligence, Major-General Sir George MacDonogh, as a “political adviser”.

What did Sir George do? The father of the British Intelligence Service found himself in the witness box some years later, being questioned by the Attorney General in a case concerning the Astra Romana company. In reply to a question, Sir George, acting nobly up to his own precept of discretion and reticence, said, “It is difficult for me to give a complete list of all I’ve done since I joined this group.” (21)

Shell still uses senior retired British Secret Service officers. Ian Forbes McCredie OBE is the current head of Shell Group “Corporate Affairs Security”. “CAS” is currently involved in a global spying operation directed at Shell employees.(21) The spying operation has not cut off the flow of leaked information to royaldutchshellplc.com.(23)

In October 2010, we found it necessary to notify the Irish Police of death threats allegedly made against Shell employees/whistleblowers working on the controversial Corrib Gas Project who have passed many Shell internal emails to us.(24)

BRIBERY & CORRUPTION

On 4 November 2010, the Daily Telegraph reported in a n article headlined “Shell to pay $48m Nigerian bribe fine” that Royal Dutch Shell had:

admitted they “approved of or condoned the payment of bribes on their behalf in Nigeria and falsely recorded the bribe payments made on their behalf as legitimate business expenses in their corporate books, records and accounts”.(25)

Extract from a related article in The Wall Street Journal:

Royal Dutch Shell PLC agreed to pay a disgorgement of $18.15 million and a $30 million criminal fine after being charged by the SEC with conspiring to violate the anti-bribery and books provisions of the FCPA for using a customs broker to pay officials to get preferential treatment related to a project in Nigeria. It entered into a deferred-prosecution agreement with the Justice Department.(26)

The fine and related costs were imposed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.(27)(28)(29)

This activity was again totally at variance with Shell’s claimed business principles, which prohibit paying bribes.
