BP is set to defy demands by the US Department of Justice to provide it with advance notice of key business decisions, setting the oil major on a collision course with the American authorities.

The DoJ wrote to BP’s lawyers last month, calling on the company to inform it at least 30 days in advance of any asset sales, restructuring, acquisitions or mergers. read more

Shell: New oil, gas project online in Nigeria

LAGOS, Nigeria

Royal Dutch Shell PLC says it has started producing oil and natural gas from a new project in Nigeria’s southern delta.

Shell issued a statement Wednesday saying its Gbaran-Ubie project will produce 70,000 barrels of oil a day and 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day when fully operational next year. Shell says the project took five years to build and encompasses five oil and gas fields across Bayelsa and Rivers state. read more

The US government has asked BP to be told of any major asset sales or merger deals in advance, as it continues to keep a close eye on the oil giant.

The highly unusual request came in a letter from the US Department of Justice dated 23 June.

BP told the BBC it had yet to respond to the letter.

The company is facing massive clean-up costs and compensation claims as a result of the Gulf of Mexico oil leak, which began in April. read more
