FAREWELL PRESIDENT YAR’ ADUA

The National Union of Ogoni Students’ USA join Nigerians and the rest of the world in mourning the untimely death of Nigeria’s President, Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua on May 5th ,2010 after a protracted illness. His passing at this moment in Nigeria’s history is troubling considering the endemic corruption that has eaten into the fabric of the polity; the political impasse in the country; and the unresolved Niger Delta crises. NUOS International, USA sympathizes with the Nigerian government, his family (particularly his aged mother), Hajiya Habiba Musa Yar’ Adua for this great and irreparable lose.

President Musa Yar’ Adua was a unique Nigerian. He was the 13th Head of Nigerian government; the first academia to head the country. He was a graduate of analytical chemistry who as Governor of Katsina State used his wealth of academic experiences and knowledge in effecting development in Katsina state which transcended borders into neighboring states.

He would be remembered for his honesty of purpose, prudent approach to all developmental issues during his era in Government. He made history been the first and only public servant to publicly declare his assets before ascending office as President of Nigeria.

The Ogoni people and National Union of Ogoni Students’ USA shall always remember him for his calm demeanor, professional decorum as he approached turbulent issues in Nigeria. He had a listening ear. Ingrained on our minds is his support of the position of the Ogoni people against Shell Oil Company. In June 2008 while on State visit to South Africa, and Italy he opined the Ogoni position by declaring Shell Oil Company persona non grata in Ogoniland. In addition, following a consistent request for him to correct the state creation impasse in Nigeria, he established the Senate Constitutional Review Committee that is poised to rectify the lopsided state imbalances in Nigeria.

NUOS international, USA is using this medium to call on his successor, President Goodluck Jonathan to emulate the good steps of his predecessor President Yar’ Adua and expedite action on the issues of Ogoni and the Niger Delta. We request an expedition of justice on systemic environmental racism in the Niger delta region; remediation of neglect and degradation caused by foreign oil firms who collaborate with the Federal government to deplete our environment. We also call upon President Jonathan to immortalize the name of Ken Saro Wiwa by creating the proposed Bori State for the people of Ogoni, Andoni, Opobo, Oyigbo.

Finally, the academic world, lovers of peace and justice shall miss President Musa Yar’Adua greatly. Fare well to an honest man who did his best to honestly serve his people and country. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.

Signed:

Mr. Pius Barikpoa Nwinee                                                                             Mr. Sampson Npimnee
