While the hunt for the next BP chairman grinds toward a conclusion in the summer, left-field names are being thrown at the job.

Among those looking for a big role, for example, is departing Eon chief executiveWulf Bernotat , whose contract will not be renewed when it ends in 2010 and has said he had concrete ideas for “new professional challenges” with “an international dimension” but would not give details. It titillated some of the German press, which speculated that the long-time Shell executive is a BP top-table contender. However, given the 40 per cent tumble in Eon shares this year, the BP chair could be a stretch.
