Can you please try to take a neutral stance on the case of Shell and Ken Saro-Wiwa in Nigeria (“Shell in court over alleged role in Nigeria executions”, News, last week)? Shell does not have a majority stake in its Nigerian ventures; rather, the Nigerian government owns a 65% interest. The government does essentially nothing for the indigenous people in the region; Shell builds schools, hospitals, roads, power plants and other facilities.

This isn’t to say that Shell is perfect, but your readers have a right to know who actually owns the oil and gas and whom the security forces primarily serve. read more

A dangerously simplistic portrait of the Niger Delta

Sir, Doubtless Shell and its lawyers are well able to make their own defence against charges being levelled at their behaviour in the oil-bearing Ogoniland region of the Niger Delta and their alleged complicity in the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa in 1995 (“Shell faces Saro-Wiwa death claim”, April 4)

Falling production to inevitably alter tilt Big Oil’s playing field

The Goldman analysts relegated BP, the former British Petroleum, to "sell" territory because of rapidly falling production. Goldman thinks 2009 will be BP's last year of production growth. Declines of 2 per cent a year after 2010 are likely because it has few new projects in the pipeline and recent startups have short lifespans.
