Spill settlement topic of talk
08/21/2008, 10:00 am
An informational meeting on the status of the class-action lawsuit Limestone Township residents filed against Shell Oil Co. will be held at 7 o’clock tonight at the First Assembly of God Church located on Illinois Route 17, about four miles west of Kankakee.
The suit came about as a result of a gas spill that occurred after a Shell pipeline broke in 1988. About 1,500 Limestone property owners took part in the suit, and Kankakee County Circuit Court Judge Gordon Lustfeldt ruled in their favor last December.
Former Will County Judge Tom Ewert is serving as settlement administrator. Shell is required to pay $46 million to settle the suit, and $26 million will be divided among the property owners. The other $20 million will go toward extending water mains.
Kankakee attorney Joe Yurgine will address the crowd at tonight’s meeting. He filed the original lawsuit in the case in 2001.

Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
