CR high on Shell Malaysia agenda
KUALA LUMPUR: Corporate responsibility (CR) is high on Shell Malaysias agenda with sustainable development as the cornerstone of this strategy, said country chairman Datuk Saw Choo Boon.
He said that when organisations adopted sustainable development policies, their operational efficiency would improve and this would also reduce the overall cost.
This would also lead to organisations producing products or services that met the customers increasingly stringent demands. Customers today are socially conscious and prefer to deal with companies whose products are socially responsible, he said.
Saw was speaking to reporters after a chief executive dialogue session on Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities. The talk was organised by Shell Malaysia in collaboration with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Business Council for Sustainable Development, Malaysia (BCSDM).

He said Shell Malaysias contribution to sustainable development meant helping to meet the worlds growing need for energy in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible way.
He said this statement carried added weight in view of the current rising oil prices crude oil stood around US$136 per barrel yesterday and increasing demand for energy affecting climate changes.
In addressing the challenges, Shell is looking at implementing new technologies, creating new products, finding new sources of fuel and even instilling fuel-saving driving habits in motorists, he said.
He said the Shell group had invested over US$1bil globally to explore alternative energy resources such as solar, wind and biofuel.
This investment is expected to triple going forward. Shell is working hard to convince governments and all stakeholders to work together in meeting carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, he said.
In conjunction with the dialogue, an ACCA-BCSDM-Shell publication entitled, Corporate Responsibility Guide for Busy Managers, was launched.
The guidebook was introduced to promote greater awareness of CR and encourage more corporations to initiate and carry out activities as part of practising good sustainable business.

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
