Shell resumes work at Bonga site

Royal Dutch Shell resumed production yesterday at its giant deepwater Bonga oilfield off the coast of Nigeria, which was shut down last week after an attack by speed-boat riding militants, reports Matthew Green in Lagos .

The closure of the field – which had been pumping about 200,000 barrels of oil per day – had damped hopes that a pledge last weekend by Saudi Arabia to boost production would tame spiralling oil prices.

Olav Ljosne, a spokesman for Shell in Lagos, said that the facility had resumed operations and “was getting back to normal”. He declined to give a precise figure for how much it was producing.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta have claimed responsibility for the attack.
