New Scientist Magazine: Oil spills go a long way under ice

EXTRACT: “…the endangered western Pacific grey whale would be hard hit by any leaks at the Sakhalin drilling site off Russia’s east coast, because its oil platforms sit near the whales’ only known summer feeding ground.”

If an oil well or pipeline should ever spring a leak in the Arctic, let’s hope it doesn’t happen under the ice: a 3D map of the contours under an ice sheet has revealed that such a spill would spread more than 10 times further than previously thought, due to the complex nature of the ice. read more

Tom Stevenson tells the very different stories of the sectors that make up the FTSE100

If ever there were a year when the FTSE100 index did not tell the whole story, it is the one now drawing to a close. With only a couple of weeks to go, the flagship measure of Britain’s stock market health is about 5 per cent higher than its starting point after bouncing around in a fairly tight range between 6,000 and 6,700. Compared with the tumult in the money markets, this looks to have been a relatively dull year for stocks. read more

NewsRoom Finland: Jorma Ollila named vice-chair of EU’s group of ‘wise men’

14.12.2007 at 19:08

EU leaders on Friday named Jorma Ollila, the chairman of Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia and Anglo-Dutch oil giant Royal Dutch Shell, one of the two vice-chairs of the bloc’s new group of “wise men”.

The controversial “reflection group” is to be led by the former Spanish prime minister Felipe Gonzalez, the other vice-chair being the former Latvian president Vaira Vike-Freiberga.

The group is not expected to have much political sway as the majority of the member states were against forming the group, an initiative by Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president. read more

If you ask the president and CEO of Bakersfield’s Aera Energy about his profession, he might say he’s a chemical engineer.

For Gene Voiland, the calling he pursued nearly 40 years ago as a Washington State University student still guides his work as the head of an oil and gas behemoth with annual revenues of almost $4 billion.

“My tendency is to look at something and say, ‘This is a problem that needs to be solved,'” Voiland, 60, said recently at Aera’s Ming Avenue headquarters. read more
