WORKERS were flown off a rig in the North Sea last night after fire broke out in the engine room.
It happened on the semisubmersible oil rig Ocean Guardian, which was drilling for Shell 120 miles north-east of Aberdeen.
A group of 32 non-essential workers were taken off in two helicopters to other nearby rigs soon after the alarm was raised at 6.20pm.
A further 55 staff stayed on board to tackle the fire.
No one was injured in the blaze and Diamond Offshore – the US firm who own the Ocean Guardian – were assessing the damage.
The dramatic rescue was co-ordinated by Aberdeen Coastguard. The rescuers included teams from the RAF and four helicopters, two on standby.
A Coastguard spokesman said: “The people remaining on the rig were able to fight the fire and it is now out.
“The company are now assessing the next step to deal with the situation.”
A spokesman for Diamond Offshore at the company’s HQ in Houston, Texas, said all the personnel on the rig were safe and well.
He added: “We have had a fire in the engine room. As a precaution, we began down-manning nonessential personnel.”
The Ocean Guardian was built by the Scott Lithgow shipyard in Glasgow in 1985.

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
