Gazprom, the Kremlin-backed Russian gas group, is negotiating a deal under which it could take a stake in up to five British gas-fired power stations, it emerged yesterday.

The move would be Gazprom’s biggest step in the UK market so far and would fuel fears about the security of future energy supplies. read more

Last month Bill Campbell, former Group Auditor of Shell International, sent this letter to parliamentarians in Britain.

Since Shell’s safety record is a matter of importance in Ireland, especially for those unfortunate enough to live downwind of the proposed Bellanaboy gas refinery site, the letter has recently been forwarded to members of the Dáil and Seanad. read more

A tribute by John Donovan to RD Wingfield, creator of Inspector Jack Frost

Extract from the Daily Telegraph: Wednesday 8 August 2007.

R D Wingfield, the crime writer who has died aged 79, created Inspector Jack Frost, the ramshackle detective played by David Jason in the ITV series A Touch Of Frost; before finding success on television, Wingfield had been a stalwart of BBC radio drama, his hallmark being scripts with clever twists and unexpected plot developments.

fool.com: Chevron’s New China Syndrome

By David Lee Smith August 8, 2007

Almost daily, fresh evidence emerges that the discovery and production of oil and gas is becoming a more technologically demanding global enterprise. Indeed, the key words in the previous sentence are “technologically” and “global.”

The difficulty is that, along with the need to find and tap reserves in progressively more remote parts of the world, comes the requirement that the exploration and production companies operate under the thumb of a growing number of capricious and unpredictable governments. In Russia, ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM), Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-B, RDS-A), and BP (NYSE: BP) have all been tested by their host government, as has a group of big integrated companies that ultimately have been shunted aside by Venezuela President Hugo Chavez’s nationalization program. read more

Investor’s Business Daily: Energy Giants Love High Prices, But That Hurts Output, Reserves

High energy prices are fueling record profits for Big Oil. But these giants face concerns about their long-term supplies due to aging production fields and energy nationalization in many parts of the world.

Exxon Mobil (XOM) and the world’s other big publicly traded oil producers enjoyed strong refining margins and asset sales in the second quarter. But those increases either barely managed or entirely failed to counteract the industry’s production-side declines. read more

Aberdeen Press & Journal: PLATFORM WITHOUT POWER (7 August story)

08:50 – 07 August 2007

Shell last night confirmed its Brent Bravo platform in the North Sea was still without power or hot water following the evacuation of 61 workers at the weekend.

The platform, 116 miles north-east of Lerwick in Shetland, is currently getting three months of routine maintenance and has a core crew of 90 people still on board.

The company insists there is no threat to the safety of the remaining crew and said those evacuated on Sunday were removed as a “precautionary measure”. read more

The Scotsman: Workers evacuated from powerless oilrig (7 August story)

7 August 2007

DOZENS of oil workers were evacuated from a North Sea platform after spending two days with no lights and no hot water.

The 61 staff were flown by helicopter to nearby rigs after the power failed on Shell’s Brent Bravo platform. The company said the workers were taken off on Sunday as a precaution and insisted there had been no threat to their safety.

Two years ago, Shell was fined £900,000 for a series of safety failings that led to the deaths of two men who were overcome by gas on the Brent Bravo. read more

UpstreamOnline: Shell evacuates Brent Bravo (7 August Story)

By Upstream staff

Dozens of oil workers were airlifted from Anglo-Dutch supermajor Shell’s Brent Bravo platform earlier this week after the rig lost power, UK media reported.

The 61 workers reportedly spent two days aboard the platform without power or hot water before Shell made the decision to evacuate the rig, The Scotsman reported.

The workers were taken by helicopters to nearby rigs on Sunday. Shell said the move was a precaution and the platform’s crew were never in danger.

A Shell spokeswoman said: “There was a trip in the power late on Friday. A spare fuel pump was flown out to the platform, but at 8pm on Saturday there was another problem and they lost power again.” read more

The Times: Total and Chevron agree to work together in Iraq

August 9, 2007
Steve Hawkes

Two of the world’s biggest oil companies have signed an agreement to work together on projects in Iraq in the first clear sign that Western energy companies are preparing to enter the country.

Reports yesterday revealed that Total had teamed up with Chevron and that they were putting together plans for Majnoon, the fourth-biggest oilfield in Iraq, with estimated potential reserves of 12 billion barrels.

Elf, now part of Total, negotiated a contract to run Majnoon with Saddam Hussein in the late 1990s. Both Total and Chevron refused to comment, but industry sources said that the two companies had met Iraqi officials to discuss a services agreement to develop the field. read more

Financial Times: Pressure builds on Kashagan oilfield investors

By Isabel Gorst in Moscow and Javier Blas in London

Kazakhstan turned up the heat this week on a consortium developing the giant Kashagan oilfield in the Caspian Sea, as investors opened talks with the government about possible changes to contract terms because of technical challenges.

The field, discovered in 2000, is the largest found in more than 30 years and could be critical for global supplies. Only three of the world’s 4,000 oilfields now exceed the 1.5m barrels-a- day production Kashagan is expected to achieve by 2019. read more
