Gale Norton, former US secretary of the interior, has joined Shell as general counsel for Shell Exploration and Production, writes Sheila McNulty.

From her office in Colorado, Ms Norton has been providing and co-ordinating legal services for Shell in its Unconventional Resources division since mid-January.

This division is focused on developing and testing proprietary technology that is designed to enhance oil recovery from sources such as oil shale and extra heavy oils.

John Hofmeister, president of Shell Oil Company and US country chair, has travelled the US in recent months publicising Shell’s efforts. “Oil shale in the Colorado, Utah and Wyoming region represents a trillion-barrel resource of oil and gas, which for decades, if not centuries, could continue to supply the oil and gas needs of America. Not exclusively, but in conjunction with conventional oil and gas,” he said in November. “The unconventional reserve of a trillion barrels is, we believe, tappable.”
