Fortune magazine voted it “the most innovative company in America” six years running, it was consistently high in the lists of “best company to work for”, it spent millions on literacy and community projects and was a pioneer of renewable, wind turbine technology.

It was, of course, Enron, now far better known for its corporate and financial mismanagement, its culture of secrecy and deceit, close ties to US politicians and alleged human rights abuses by subsidiaries in India. read more

Daily Telegraph: Shell hath seen no fury like a corporate wife scorned

“First Shell lost its oil and gas.”

By Christopher Hope, Business Correspondent (Filed: 17/07/2004)

First Shell lost its oil and gas. Now its wives are losing their reserve after Shell decided not to invite them to a corporate jamboree next year.

Shell is not asking the wives of the company’s heads of finance to next year’s group finance conference, when all Shell’s top money men meet to discuss how to make its sums add up (and not lose any more oil and gas).

Wives were welcome at the last conference, held in 2002 in Marseille in the south of France. But not this time. Not surprisingly, this has left some of them feeling a bit put out. “It’s so unfair, I hardly see my husband anyway,” one wife said. read more

Shell ponders reserves approval from US

Financial Times: Shell ponders reserves approval from US

“forced to cut its overall level of proved reserves by more than 20 per cent in January after years of overbooking”

By James Boxell

Jul 17, 2004

Royal Dutch/Shell may need to seek approval from US regulators on whether it can book reserves from a $5bn (£2.9bn) natural gas project in Qatar, the Dutch-English energy group said yesterday.

The company was forced to cut its overall level of proved reserves by more than 20 per cent in January after years of overbooking.

It has been hoping that the Qatar gas-to-liquids (GTL) project would help it make up some of the shortfall.

The booking of reserves from Qatar is potentially contentious because Shell and other international companies setting up similar projects in the country are getting access to the “feedstock” natural gas from the government at a relatively cheap price. read more

Bloomberg: Shell Says SEC Rules on Gas-to-Liquids Reserves Are `Untested’

Bloomberg: Shell Says SEC Rules on Gas-to-Liquids Reserves Are `Untested’

Posted 17 June 04

July 16 (Bloomberg) — Royal Dutch/Shell Group, Europe’s second-largest oil company, said a $5 billion natural gas project in Qatar marks an “untested area” that may require talks with U.S. regulators to recognize the reserves in its books.

The venture to convert gas into diesel and other fuels is almost 10 times the size of the largest such plant in existence. Shell is counting on Qatar to help recover proven reserves, which the company on Jan. 9 said had been overstated for years. The Securities and Exchange Commission has the strictest definition of what can be included in an oil company’s accounts. read more
