Royal Dutch Shell profit overstated $276m

odt.co.nz : Royal Dutch Shell profit overstated $276m

“it had also made errors in the way it accounted for exploration costs, certain gas contracts and the earnings per share of its parent companies.”

Washington: The Royal Dutch Shell Group said Friday the overstatement of its proven oil and gas reserves resulted in profits being exaggerated by $US276 million ($NZ436.1 million), and that “inappropriate” accounting in other areas resulted in profits being embellished by an additional $US156 million.

The revision followed an embarrassing series of disclosures that in total reduced the company’s reported reserves by nearly one-quarter and led to the departure of several top executives. read more

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) — Among the companies whose shares are likely to see active trading in Tuesday’s session is Royal Dutch/Shell Group.

The company said Friday it was cutting its previously reported 2002 net assets by $276 million to reflect overstatements of its proven oil and gas reserves. Since January, Royal Dutch/Shell Group has announced a series of reductions to its proven reserves. “The effect of the restatement was to reduce…the previously reported net assets as at December 31, 2002 by $276 million,” and reduce 2000-2002 earnings by $230 million, the company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. read more

Business Day: Overstatement raised oil giant’s profit by $432m

“Last Monday the leaders of Royal Dutch/Shell asked shareholders for forgiveness and time to revamp the oil giant.”

5 July 2004

WASHINGTON The Royal Dutch/Shell Group said the overstating of its oil and gas reserves and “inappropriate” accounting in other business segments exaggerated its profit by $432m.

The revision followed an embarrassing series of disclosures that reduced the company’s reported reserves by nearly a quarter and led to the departure of several of its top executives.

The biggest downward revision was for 2002, when the faulty accounting resulted in the company’s profit being overstated by 208m. In 2001 the reduction was 56m, in 2000 it was $122m and prior to 2000 it was $46m. read more

IEA to push for global standards on reserves

Financial Times: IEA to push for global standards on reserves

“There are no consistent rules on oil reserves,”

By Kevin Morrison in London

Jul 05, 2004

The International Energy Agency is planning to unveil plans in October that it hopes will lead to a mandatory global standard for accounting of oil and gas reserves.

Controversial rules on oil industry reserves amid the fall-out from the Royal Dutch/Shell Group’s slashing of its oil reserves by 20 per cent this year has raised the need for harmonising standards.

The controversy stems from the interpretation of the reserve rules adopted by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, which the oil industry has criticised for being vague and out of date. read more
