AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – Royal Dutch/Shell Group says it will make Linda Cook, head of Shell Canada, a new managing director from August 1 to bolster a board depleted by recent sackings.

Cook, a veteran of more than 20 years with the firm, will take on executive responsibility for gas and power from the incumbent Malcolm Brinded, taking the number of top executives on the Committee of Managing Directors (CMD), the top executive grouping in Shell’s twin-holding hierarchy, to four from three.

The Supervisory Board and the Board of Management of N.V. Koninklijke Nederlandsche Petroleum Maatschappij (Royal Dutch Petroleum Company) announce that at the General Meeting of Shareholders of the Company to be held on 28th June 2004, it will be proposed that Ms L.Z. Cook be appointed a Managing Director of the Company with effect from 1st August 2004.

It is the intention that after her appointment as a Managing Director of the Company, Ms Cook be appointed a member of the Presidium of the Board of Directors of Shell Petroleum N.V., and a Managing Director of The Shell Petroleum Company Limited with effect from 1st August 2004, thereby becoming a Group Managing Director of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies.

CALGARY (CP) – Shell Canada’s top leadership will change for the second time in a year after the company announced Tuesday that president and chief executive Linda Cook is leaving to return to its scandal-plagued European parent.

Shell said Cook will depart from the Calgary-based company in July, just a year after taking over, and assume a new role in August as a managing director with Royal Dutch Petroleum.

Clive Mather, now chairman of Shell UK Ltd., will succeed Cook as Shell Canada’s president and CEO.

LOS ANGELES (AP)–State lawmakers will probe what’s behind California’s high gas prices following an increase in the average price of self-serve regular to a new high of $2.269 per gallon.

The new Senate Select Committee on Gasoline and Diesel Pricing announced Monday it will launch an investigation patterned after the inquiry into manipulation of California’s energy market in 2000 and 2001, said Senate President Pro Tem John Burton, D-San Francisco.
