Sinead Lynch, UK country chair for Shell, said yesterday that the oil giant knows that it “needs to change” in the coming energy transition, and “that is what Shell is going to do”.

As part of a panel at the All-Energy conference in Glasgow, Ms Lynch said that Shell was part of a movement within the industry which was recognising the energy transition and that Shell was “beginning that change”.
She said: “Shell has a deep history and deep roots across Scotland, in our upstream business where we have been investing in and producing from the North Sea for 50 years. But also in our downstream business where we have been producing a number of downstream products to our customers here for almost a 100 years, and that’s a range of products that’s beginning to change.
“It is our response as a company to climate change that an energy transition takes shape. There is no other single issue with the potential to disrupt my industry on such a deep and fundamental level as energy transition. In response, we need to adapt and we need to change. And that is what Shell is going to do.”
Ms Lynch spoke about what Shell will do to make changes and that the firm will bring down the net carbon footprint of the company by approximately half by 2050, in line with Shell’s recent energy transition report.
Shell said last month that it would continue to “sell the oil and gas that society needs” but would also position itself to transition further into low-carbon energy when it “makes commercial sense”.
Ms Lynch said: “The really crucial thing is this; this includes all the products we sell. Those we produce ourselves, those we buy from other and sell on, as well as our operations.
“Focusing on these products does make this a far greater challenge for us. If you look at the net carbon footprint of our company, about 15% of it comes from our operations, all the rest comes from people like you and me using our products day-in, day-out.”
Ms Lynch said: “Our new energies business will look to spend between one and two billion dollars per year per year, now to 2020. What we’re focusing on is power and new fuels. In new fuels we mean electric vehicles (EV) we mean hydrogen and liquefied natural gas (LNG), we mean paraffinic fuels like gas-to-liquids (GTL) and biofuels also.
“In the UK we’re focusing quite heavily on EV charging. That’s giving our customers part of what they’re looking for in e-mobility. We have also bought NewMotion, [they’ve got], I think 35,000 charge points in Europe, they’ve only got a few hundred in the UK so it’s small here. The idea will be to grow that offering.”

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
