PRESS: Shell Lobbied EU To Favour Gas Over Renewables – The Guardian

LONDON (Alliance News) – Royal Dutch Shell PLC successfully lobbied to undermine European renewable energy targets, in favour of the expanded use of gas, ahead of a key agreement on emissions cuts reached in October last year, according to newly released documents obtained by The Guardian newspaper.

Citing documents it received under the Freedom of Information Act, the newspaper said Shell began lobbying the then European Commission president, Jose Manuel Barroso, since 2011 to scrap the European Union’s formula for linking carbon-cutting goals with binding renewable energy laws. read more

Will the hoped-for green jobs materialise?

Although BP and Shell have pulled out of the UK offshore market, others such as Masdar, the Abu Dhabi government's investment vehicle for sustainable energy, moved to fill the gap. Masdar acquired a 20 per cent stake in in the £2bn London Array offshore wind project after Shell walked away.

Stranded but not sunk amid a deepening financial storm

In May, Shell provoked uproar when it withdrew from the world's largest offshore windfarm - the London Array in the Thames Estuary - after the costs allegedly had risen from £1 billion in 2003 to £3 billion.

Oil multinationals in “Renewable Energy” – it makes no sense.

We continue to be deluged with corporate advertising claiming that the multinational oil companies are in the vanguard in promoting the benefits of renewable energy. The latest ads from BP, the “beyond petroleum” company, are a case in point. They say that a combination of Oil+Gas+Wind+Solar+Biofuels will give the world a “dependable energy future”. True of course, although they conveniently miss out nuclear power – presumably because there is certainly no chance that BP will go nuclear. read more

Isn't the professed devotion of Shell and BP today to renewables mere greenwash, though? “Greenwash is a pejorative term. I'm not sure that's warranted. These are companies like any other companies and they exist to make money.”

Shell exec speaks on carbon dioxide capture and storage

Discuss Download Photo: Hamad Saber

John Barry: We know that the C02 concentration in the atmosphere has gone up measurably in recent years. We also know that it’s not what’s happened so far that is the problem. It’s what’s going to happen over the next 100 years if we don’t start to manage the problem.

That’s John Barry with Shell. He leads one of Shell’s efforts to manage carbon dioxide emissions – thought to be changing Earth’s climate. He spoke of carbon dioxide capture and storage.

John Barry: Carbon dioxide capture and storage is one of the technologies that offers the most promise for making a difference to CO2 emissions in the short to medium term – I’m thinking 10 or 20 years. A hundred years out, maybe there will be technologies we haven’t thought of today. read more

Former Shell Exec Paddy Briggs comments on Shell’s sale of its stake in the London Array Wind Farm

By Paddy Briggs

This is important news. These two major companies would not have made this investment if they did not think that the project was viable. So Shell’s withdrawal has nothing to do with the inherent merits of the project but with their continued aversion to activities away form their core hydrocarbon business. As a shareholder I have no problem with this. As Tom Peters wisely said – STICK TO YOUR KNITTING !

What I object to, however, is the continued claims by Shell and other Oil Majors that they are genuinely interested in “Renewables”. The reality is that they have neither the time nor the skills nor the imagination to be heavily involved in Wind Energy (etc.). The number of staff, the capital investment and the revenue expenditure on Renewables is minuscule compared with the core hydrocarbon business. But the rhetoric in the corporate advertising of Shell and the rest is quite disproportionate to this reality. It really is utterly hypocritical. read more

Energy boss with the wind in his sails

Shell has pulled out of the world's biggest offshore wind farm, the London Array, off the Kent and Essex coasts, amid soaring costs;

He does accept that Shell's decision to concentrate on the US, where the biggest and most attractive opportunities in the wind business exist, is part of a wider trend.

Gordon Brown in a hurry to get nowhere

No matter what the Government says, there is no solution to the problem of dear energy. Jeroen van der Veer, chief executive of Shell, answers back

How has the culture of Shell changed since the reserve scandals of 2004?

A: Jeroen van der Veer:

Absolutely. The unification of Royal Dutch and Shell Transport in 2005 has simplified our governance structure. Accountabilities are now absolutely clear. We have a single chief executive. We have a single board. And it is a board where there is true dialogue! So we’re in very good shape on that front.

Shell chief says all energy sources must be tapped

In February, its parent company, Royal Dutch Shell, said it would maintain a broad portfolio of renewable resources including biofuels, hydrogen, solar, wind and nuclear power. That came after company chief executive officer Jeroen van der Veer said in January that supplies of easy-to-access oil and natural gas would fail to meet global demand for such after 2015.

A Royal Dutch Shell executive said there's "plenty of oil in the world," but whoever restricts supply -- read Saudi Arabia, Venezuela et al -- are in fact spurring alternatives such as wind, solar and nuclear energy and Canadian tar sands.

Shell: Crude shortfalls will boost renewables

There's "plenty of oil in the world," Shell's Scenario Team said today on a Webcast led by Global Business Environment Vice President Jeremy Bentham. "The important moment is actually not a possible peak of oil production;" it's when demand exceeds supply, which may "come well before a peak" in output.

Dawn of an energy famine

This week the shape of the global energy crisis came into its sharpest focus yet. The world needs renewable energy fast, but as BP and Shell announced record profits, they also demonstrated that they are in essence retreating from renewables, perhaps with the exception of biofuels. They intend to focus their record billions on expanding production of what remains of traditional oil and gas, plus tar sands and liquid fuels from coal - ruinous in their effect on the climate.

Letters to The Guardian: Shell ditches renewables stake

Google Images: Shell Logo

Following the government’s recent re-embrace of nationalisation, and Shell’s decision to withdraw from the London Array project (Shell ditches renewables stake, May 1), how about bringing Shell’s share into public ownership, financed by an appropriate levy on Shell’s rapidly increasing profits?

In search of some wind in their sails

Shell may have been concerned by the rising price of offshore wind, but it is seriously misguided if it thinks that concentrating its efforts on extracting the remaining fossil fuels is a better bet than renewables in the medium or long term.
