Shell boosts second generation biofuels

Royal Dutch Shell is stepping up investment in research into “second generation” biofuels, putting more money into its joint venture with Iogen, a Canadian biotech company, in spite of having made only slow progress so far.

Biofuels to blame for 75 per cent increase in price of food

The confidential report, based on a detailed economic analysis of the effect of biofuels, will put pressure on the American and European governments, which have turned to biofuels in attempts to reduce the greenhouse gases associated with fossil fuels and to reduce their reliance on oil imports.

Promise of Biofuel Clouded by Weather Risks

The floods have helped send the price of ethanol up 19 percent in a month. They appear to have had little effect on the price of gasoline at the pump, as ethanol represents only about 6 percent of the nation’s transport fuel today.

Biofuels now seen as polluting and a threat to forests and food production

Brazil's ambitious plans for supplying the world with renewable sugarcane ethanol have been put on hold as criticism of biofuels escalates. Instead of being seen as a solution, biofuels have become the new villains of the energy scene and are now blamed for everything from hunger to climate change itself.

Jeroen van der Veer, chief executive of Shell, answers back

How has the culture of Shell changed since the reserve scandals of 2004?

A: Jeroen van der Veer:

Absolutely. The unification of Royal Dutch and Shell Transport in 2005 has simplified our governance structure. Accountabilities are now absolutely clear. We have a single chief executive. We have a single board. And it is a board where there is true dialogue! So we’re in very good shape on that front.

Shell ‘selling suicide’ by preferring tar sands to wind

Shell was accused yesterday of "selling suicide on the forecourt" by pressing ahead with tar sands operations in Canada and continuing to flare off excess gas in Nigeria while pulling out of renewable schemes such as the London Array - the world's largest offshore wind scheme.

Running on empty?

So are the peak oilists right? A series of recent events certainly appears to lend credence to those who argue that the world's ageing oilfields are being sucked dry amid China's and India's determination to lift themselves out of poverty and the west's reluctance to give up the luxuries of modern oil-dependent life.

Shell chief says all energy sources must be tapped

In February, its parent company, Royal Dutch Shell, said it would maintain a broad portfolio of renewable resources including biofuels, hydrogen, solar, wind and nuclear power. That came after company chief executive officer Jeroen van der Veer said in January that supplies of easy-to-access oil and natural gas would fail to meet global demand for such after 2015.

Dawn of an energy famine

This week the shape of the global energy crisis came into its sharpest focus yet. The world needs renewable energy fast, but as BP and Shell announced record profits, they also demonstrated that they are in essence retreating from renewables, perhaps with the exception of biofuels. They intend to focus their record billions on expanding production of what remains of traditional oil and gas, plus tar sands and liquid fuels from coal - ruinous in their effect on the climate.

Shell and E.ON to Build 1,000 MW Wind Power Plant in UK

RedNova.com: Shell and E.ON to Build 1,000 MW Wind Power Plant in UK

Wednesday 7 Sept 2005

Shell (UK/Netherlands), oil concern, and the power concern E.ON (Germany) plan to jointly build a 1,000 MW wind power plant on the UK coast. The oil concern BP (UK) is engaged in solar power engineering. Besides, oil concerns invest in biofuel production and study the use of hydrogen as an energy resource

Until recently, investments in alternative resources were unprofitable. It will take long before alternative resources can cover at least a part of the growing demand for energies worldwide. It is expected that oil production will culminate around 2030 at the latest in terms of volume. It will not disappear from the market then either, but mining from big depths in oil sands or slates will be much more expensive. Shell claims that renewable energy resources will cover roughly one third of global energy consumption around 2050. However, the demand for energies will be up to three times as high as it is in 2005. read more

Royal Dutch Shell has bought a minority stake in Choren Industries

Financial Times: Investment made in biofuels

“Royal Dutch Shell has bought a minority stake in Choren Industries, a German company that plans to turn wood chips into tar-free biofuel for use in cars.”

Published: August 18 2005

Royal Dutch Shell has bought a minority stake in Choren Industries, a German company that plans to turn wood chips into tar-freebiofuel for use in cars.

Shell would not disclose how much it had invested in Choren, which proposes to build a €50m (£34m) biofuel plant in Freiberg, eastern Germany. But it is understood that Shell’s stake in the private company is less than 25 per cent.

Choren plans to produce 15,000 tonnes of biofuel a year. It is marketing the product as SunFuel to petrol retailers and motorists. read more

Biofuel drive is simply another form of aid for Europe’s farms

The Times (UK): Biofuel drive is simply another form of aid for Europe’s farms

“There are new technologies on the way; Shell is working on a venture in Canada that converts straw into ethanol, a more efficient process that produces less CO2.”

Wednesday 3 August 2005

By Carl Mortished

BRUSSELS is pushing for more power from plants. Biofuels, such as ethanol, sound good — fewer harmful emissions, a renewable resource and less dependence on oil imports.

Instead of subsidies for sugar mountains and wine lakes, European farmers would have a ready market for their surplus produce — converting plant starches and sugars into vegetable oil or alcohol-based road fuels. The European Commission is directing us to use more biodiesel and if oil companies are less than enthused, that adds to the attraction — liberation from the multinational merchants of crude. read more

As our appetite for oil hastens climate change, who will speak out for the alternatives? One possible champion is Lord Ron Oxburgh, the distinguished geologist who also happens to be chairman of Shell. He tells Aida Edemariam why the time for complacency is over

Wednesday June 15, 2005
