Shell self-insurance of Arctic drilling risk

COMMENT BY A FORMER SHELL EMPLOYEE

I just read your blog about Shell not being able to obtain disaster insurance for its operations in the Arctic. I interpret this to mean that the insurance underwriters, who are pros at this sort of thing, find the probability of an ‘accident’ on the part of Shell during drilling operations to be so high that they are unwilling to risk their own financial well being.

This is essentially a vote of ‘no confidence’ on the part of the insurance industry in Shell’s contingency plans, and Shell’s engineering and management capabilities, i.e., the competence of Shell staff, technical as well as administrative. The insurance industry simply finds that Shell is not up to the task at hand and the risk of a major accident is too great. read more

Shell unable to insure risk of Arctic drilling?

EMAIL SENT TO ROYAL DUTCH SHELL PLC COMPANY SECRETARY MICHIEL BRANDJES BY JOHN DONOVAN

From: John Donovan <[email protected]>
Subject: AGM
Date: 22 May 2012 23:36:40 GMT+01:00
To: [email protected]

Dear Mr Brandjes

I would like to verify two answers given by the Shell board during the AGM held today.

SELF-INSURING THE ARCTIC DRILLING RISK

Did I hear correctly that Shell has been unable to obtain contingent insurance from Lloyd’s of London against a major disaster arising from your pending Arctic drilling project, and that instead, Shell is going to self-insure? This means Shell shareholders will run the risk of the company being potentially made bankrupt, as very nearly happened to BP due to the Macondo disaster.  I am astonished that this situation, if I correctly understood what was stated, has not been picked up by the news media.  It means that the risk is deemed so dire by  Lloyds’ underwriters that they will not insure the risk at any cost. In this regard, the risks involved in Arctic drilling are obviously potentially far greater than drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. read more

SELECTION OF RECENT ARTICLES ON ROYAL DUTCH SHELL PLC.COM

HOW TO GUT GOLIATH

At long last, someone has written an invaluable guide on how ordinary individuals can publicly criticize the rich and powerful, including multinational corporations, by using the Internet.

EXTRACT: …the most successful gripe site of all time, which targets Shell Oil, actually operates under the domain name royaldutchshellplc.com, Shell’s legal trading name.

ALLEGED BRIBERY AND CORRUPTION AT SHELL MOTIVA

The supplier in question advised us of a favored relationship Shell has had with a rival vendor. It became plain that unless they were prepared to abandon their own principles and hand out substantial bribes, they might as well give up trying to do business with Shell/Motiva. Contract/procurement decisions are allegedly made not on competitive pricing and first class support, but instead on the size and frequency of bribes. So its basically, cough up or give up. read more

Dear Mr Brandjes

Shell Job Application Farce

Shell has been prepared to put up with the ignominy of its “No1 Enemy” receiving private communications meant for the company. Several years ago Mr Michiel Brandjes (right), Company Secretary & General Counsel Corporate, gave us written permission to vet incoming mail on behalf of Shell, using our discretion to remove and destroy what we consider to be spam and pass on to Shell what we decide they ought to see!

By John Donovan

Because Royal Dutch Shell Plc petulantly decided to keep trading under the name Royal Dutch Shell Plc  despite knowing that my father, Alfred Donovan, had registered the RoyalDutchShellPlc.com domain name, a certain amount of unforeseen confusion was probably inevitable.

Shell tried to escape humiliation by attempting to seize the domain name, issuing proceedings against him. Shell lost the case and did not bother to appeal against a unanimous verdict, which resulted in yet more embarrassment.

Royal Dutch Shell treachery over Iranian oil

Despite giving the impression to the contrary, Royal Dutch Shell has continued funding a fanatical regime intent on the extermination of the Jewish people. Iran is bent on developing nuclear weapons to destroy Israel, finishing the job that Shell’s former Nazi partners embarked upon, killing millions of Jews in the Holocaust.

By John Donovan

Reuters is reporting that an Iranian supertanker anchored near Singapore for the past week has just moored at Royal Dutch Shell’s refinery and is about to discharge 1.5 million barrels of Iranian crude. The latest news comes despite the impression from Shell that it had ended its treacherous relationship with Iran.

It appears to be directly at odds with an assurance given by Royal Dutch Shell CEO Peter Voser just a month ago. See Reuters article below.

Even though well versed in the duplicity, deceit and trickery of Shell, I had thought, based on such  signals from Shell, that the company had finally ended its trading with Iran. I should have known better. read more

Shell flouts discrimination ruling by Dutch Equal Treatment Commission

THIS ARTICLE WAS SENT TO SHELL SOME DAYS AGO GIVING SHELL THE OPPORTUNITY TO POINT OUT ANY INACCURACY AND PROVIDE COMMENT IF IT WISHED TO DO SO. SHELL HAS THUS FAR NOT TAKEN UP THE INVITATION.

By John Donovan

A few months ago Shell was found guilty of discrimination towards an employee by the Dutch Commission for Equal Treatment (the CGB). The decision has ramifications for over 1,100 Royal Dutch Shell employees.

Shell Global Solutions International BV subsequently decided “after careful consideration” to flout the relevant Judgement,  which confirmed discrimination by Shell against the part-time employee in question, regarding compensation relating to public holidays.

The judgement arose from a discrimination case against Shell brought by Mr Alberto Gatti, who works four days per week for Shell, thereby receiving a 20% reduction of monthly salary compared with a full time employee. He brought the case on a point of principle. Namely, fair treatment between employees. read more

Shell Tanker ‘Capulonix’: Murder and cover-up on the high seas?

Shell Tanker ‘Capulonix’

By Alfred & John Donovan

An article on an alleged murder and cover-up, which allegedly took place on the Shell tanker ‘Capulnix’ many years ago, was republished yesterday on a Dutch website.

It therefore seem appropriate to republish our own article on the subject.

In 1974 it was reported that a Shell employee, Leo Rapmund (36), a crewmember on the Shell tanker, ‘Capulonix’, had gone missing, presumed lost overboard.

Over two decades later Rapmund’s family was contacted by a fellow crewmember at the time of the tragedy who wanted to clear his conscience about his knowledge of what really happened. Basically he revealed that Leo Rapmund had been murdered and there were many eyewitnesses to the crime. read more

Shell accused of fuelling violence in Nigeria by paying rival militant gangs

Oil company rejects watchdog’s claims that its local contracts made it complicit in the killing of civilians

Shell has fuelled armed conflict in Nigeria by paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to feuding militant groups, according to an investigation by the oil industry watchdog Platform, and a coalition of non-government organisations.

The oil giant is implicated in a decade of human rights abuses in the Niger delta, the study says, claiming that its routine payments exacerbated local violence, in one case leading to the deaths of 60 people and the destruction of an entire town.

Platform’s investigation, which includes testimony from Shell’s own managers, also alleges that government forces hired by Shell perpetrated atrocities against local civilians, including unlawful killings and systematic torture. read more

Shell Internet Censorship

“One of the principles underlying all of our work on the Web has been that we should be true to the spirit of New Shell. This means that we are seen to be open, listening, interested in the views of others…”: SHELL CENSOR – MARCH 1999

Shell Internet Censorship

By John Donovan

Printed below is a Shell internal email sent in March 1999. Shell was obliged to supply it to us in accordance with an application we made under the UK Data Protection Act. The “X’s” denote sections redacted (censored) by Shell, which includes the name of its author and apparently an extensive circulation list – 4 lines deep.

Dear Mr Donovan

There is no deceit and my statement was true.  An individual may chose to give out his or her card on the basis of the information it contains.  The address book along with the data it contained was distributed without the consent of anyone.

I am sure you would not counsel anyone to commit the criminal offences I drew your attention to. read more

Dear Mr Wiseman

I agreed to your request not to make the Shell Global Address Book accessible online because you stated in an email that the personal safety of some Shell employees could be compromised by its publication. This was not an off-the-cuff comment, but one made after you had the opportunity to consider and consult with colleagues more familiar with the nature and contents of the leaked directory. read more

Shell trickery over Data Protection Act compliance

By John Donovan

Shell and its lawyers have had advance sight of what you are about to read and therefore the opportunity to seek an injunction to prevent publication, but have not done so. Our most recent email to Shell on this matter is published at the foot of the article.

Royal Dutch Shell trickery over UK Data Protection Act (DPA)

As long term prominent critics of Shell management, my father (Alfred) and I have found some of the information supplied to us by Shell under the Data Protection Act law to be very revealing. Some would say astonishing.

I note from the Shell internal documents supplied to my son that Shell has engaged in some wishful thinking regarding my age (I am now almost 93). Unfortunately for Shell, I am still very much alive and kicking.

Dear Mr Donovan,

Thank you for your message. I have referred all your emails regarding Data Protection Act (“DPA”) matters to the relevant staff and officers dealing with such matters and take it that they have responded as they deem appropriate. I am at this time not a spokes person for the Company in these DPA matters and a response by a Shell spokes person to a message addressed to me should count as a response by me. read more

Reference my recent email, I received yesterday an email response from Michiel Brandjes, Company Secretary and General Counsel Corporate of Royal Dutch Shell Plc. I will publish it later today along with my reply, which will reveal more information from the remarkable Shell internal documents the company was compelled to provide, following my application under the Data Protection Act.

As will be seen, we remain fans of Mr Brandjes.

EMAIL TO MICHIEL BRANDJES AND PETER VOSER CONCERNING SHELL SPY SCANDAL

Since I know from our contact with you over recent years that you are normally an unfailingly polite and efficient Company Secretary, I suspect that this change results from criticism you have received internally for being “a bit too enthusiastic about responding to Donovan…:" Apparently one of your colleagues - I can guess who - is jealous at the praise you have received on our website.
