Impact on Royal Dutch Shell from Putin’s Missile

Screen Shot 2014-07-18 at 10.15.15

Screen Shot 2014-02-10 at 16.29.29The whole geopolitical situation has now become even more precarious following the deliberate shooting down of the Malaysian Airlines Flight MH-17. If that was not bad enough, it transpires that over 170 of the people on board the ill-fated flight were Dutch and three of the passengers were Shell employees. What will Ben van Beurden do if it is confirmed that the Sun front page headline today is accurate, bearing in mind that Putin has already annexed Crimea and is behind the rebels/terrorists trying to grab an even larger slice of the Ukraine for him?

By John Donovan

Shell’s relationship with Russia and the Ukraine became more difficult earlier this week when the USA escalated sanctions against Russia, targeting in particular Russian energy giant Rosneft and Gazprombank, the financial arm of Gazprom.

Rosneft and Gazprom are controlled by the corrupt and aggressive Putin regime. Both companies have important business dealings with Shell.

Shell has already pledged to comply with all international sanctions against Russia, but the pledge seems at odds with grovelling comments made to Putin on 18 April 2014 by Royal Dutch Shell CEO, Ben van Beurden.  read more

Shell suspends development of Canada’s Jumping Pound gas liquefaction unit

Screen Shot 2014-02-10 at 16.29.29Extracts from a Reuters article published Friday 18 July 2014

LONDON, July 18 (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell said it has suspended development of a liquefaction unit at Canada’s Jumping Pound facility…

“We believe LNG (liquefied natural gas) in transport is a considerable opportunity for Shell, but it is an emerging market and we must have a balanced approach to its development,” a company spokseman said.

The shale gas production boom has pulled down natural gas prices in North America, making LNG competitive with oil in the transport sector, but development costs remain high. read more

LNG spot crash persists as Shell bizarrely talks it up

Screen Shot 2014-02-10 at 16.29.29Extracts from an article published by macro business.com on 18 July 2014

Prices of spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) for August delivery to Asia plummeted 26.5% year-over-year to an average $11.365 per million British thermal units (/MMBtu), the lowest monthly average since April 2011, the latest Platts Japan/Korea Marker (JKM) for month-ahead delivery showed. The drop came as supply continued to outweigh demand.

So, supply is already crimping prices at the margin, even accounting for seasonality. Not good news for Australia’s overpriced magnificent seven projects, though they are protected by oil-linked contracts for now. read more

Lift productivity to lure LNG investment, says Shell CEO Ben van Beurden

Screen Shot 2014-02-10 at 16.29.29Extracts from an article by Matt Chambers published by The Australian on Friday 18 July 2014

THE head of the world’s second biggest company, Royal Dutch Shell, says Australia maintains an edge in attracting LNG investment but needs to improve labour productivity and start acting on commitments to streamline approvals if it is to capture growth from new competitors such as Papua New Guinea, the US and east Africa.

Despite making $10 billion of asset sales here since taking the top job in January — including the company’s refinery and service station business — Shell chief executive Ben van Beurden wants to make more investments. read more

Defamatory posters at Shell Ireland HQ today

CORRIB LIES AND COVER-UP

Former Irish Shell supplier OSSL, the “Mr Fixit” company that turned whistleblower over Shell corruption of the Garda, has today upped the defamation stakes still higher by putting posters on public display outside Shell EP Ireland HQ in Dublin.

They are displayed below.

Hence, if Shell decides to defend itself and Corrib manager Brian Foley against the OSSL allegations it claims are false, it will also have to sue me.

If Shell fails to defend Foley’s reputation, then the public will be able to draw the appropriate conclusion.   read more

Shell says makes 3rd major discovery in Norphlet play in Gulf

Screen Shot 2014-02-10 at 16.29.29Reuters article published Tuesday 15 July 2014

(Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell Plc said on Tuesday it had found roughly 100 million barrels of oil equivalent (boed) in the Gulf of Mexico’s Norphlet formation, its third discovery there.

The company, the gulf’s largest operator, found the oil near its Rydberg well, roughly 75 miles off the Louisiana coast.

The company drilled the well about 26,300 feet, including about 7,400 feet of water, and found oil reserves about 400 feet deep.

Shell is the project’s primary operator, and partners with Ecopetrol SA and CNOOC Ltd’s Nexen. read more

No prospect of libel action by Shell or the Garda against OSSL

According to her article, following publication of the Ombudsman findings, both Shell and the Garda have declined to say whether they will take legal action against OSSL “for possible reputational damage due to the public nature of the allegations.”

Another serious shutdown at Shell Motiva refinery

Reuters article published Tue Jul 15, 2014 under the headline: “Damaged heater likely shut distillation unit at Motiva refinery”

(Reuters) – A heavily damaged heater on a newly commissioned 325,000 barrel per day (bpd) crude distillation unit is the likely cause of a unexpected shutdown that may last up to five months at Motiva Enterprises 600,000 bpd Port Arthur, Texas, refinery, according to experts.

All guns blazing from company that alleged Shell Corruption of Irish Police

“Let us clearly state Officers Gilligan, Gill Butler and Grimes offloaded alcohol exactly as described by OSSL, and as clearly understood by Michael Crothers CEO of Shell when he offered to pay for it in The Burlington Hotel in Dublin in the presence of legal people for both Shell /OSSL.”

By John Donovan

If you make a serious accusation against a public servant and that individual is subsequently cleared by an official investigation, it becomes an even more serious libel if the same unfounded accusation is repeated.

This upping of the defamation stakes is multiplied in the case of Irish police officers accused by OSSL of handling alcohol purchased by OSSL on behalf of Shell, as they have been effectively cleared of the allegations in FIVE separate investigations. Two by the Garda, two by Shell and the most recent by the Garda Ombudsman Commission (GSOC). read more

Buy Royal Dutch Shell on a pullback, says Jim Cramer

It seems a major turnaround is unfolding at Royal Dutch Shell, making its stock very attractive should it fall from current levels, CNBC’s Jim Cramer said Friday. “The CEO has basically said, ‘Look, we’ll do whatever’s necessary to make money here.’ And there’s a lot of fat in a company like Royal Dutch,” Cramer said. “They’ve got a lot of great assets. Top criminologist calls for inquiry into Corrib policing

Screen Shot 2014-05-07 at 15.40.29Extract from a Lorna Siggins article published by the Irish Times Friday 11 July 2014

The Queen’s University Belfast academic who exposed the South Yorkshire police handling of the 1989 Hillsborough football stadium disaster has supported calls for a full review of the policing of the Corrib gas project in north Mayo.

Criminologist Prof Phil Scraton says international concern about Garda handling of opposition to the gas project reflects a belief that it has “moved beyond a series of specific incidents to something of much greater institutional consequence”.

He considers that the policing of the gas project from late 2006 merits a non-statutory review of all available documentation, which could be a prelude to a full statutory inquiry. read more

Shell cleared of bribing Irish Police, but for how long?

Screen Shot 2014-06-16 at 17.29.11

By John Donovan

According to a report published earlier this evening by the Irish Examiner, it appears that Shell has been cleared of bribing the Irish police.

Under the circumstances I will expect libel writs in the post from those police officers who I have named as being involved in the corruption which took place.

Should I be worried? Not at all.

The verdict of no evidence is in line with the previous internal investigation results by the Irish Police and Shell.

What will it do to the already heavily damaged reputation of the Irish Justice Ministry, the Garda and the Garda Ombudsman Commission, if in fact there is hard evidence proving the OSSL allegations? read more

Shell leaves its peers behind on big gas-to-liquids plants

Screen Shot 2014-02-10 at 16.29.29Reuters article by Alex Lawler published 10 July 2014

LONDON, July 10 (Reuters) – Shell will press on with new plants to convert gas to liquid fuels, its investment and technical edge leaving its peers behind in the process once seen as a radical game changer.

The company has seen costs overrun at its flagship Qatar plant, cancelled a U.S. project and is relying on a favourable link between prices for feedstock natural gas and oil – factors which have jangled the nerves of some investors in Royal Dutch Shell

Investors are also wary of the massive upfront costs companies face in building the gas-to-liquids (GTL) plants. Only Shell and South Africa’s Sasol have so far made GTL plants work on a large scale. read more

Prelude FLNG: A case of all your eggs in the one basket

Screen Shot 2014-07-04 at 00.39.39Fourth in a series of articles by Bill Campbell, retired HSE Group Auditor, Shell International, about safety issues relating to the Shell Prelude FLNG project.

Why Floating LNG is such a risky business venture

It’s an old saying but it is one that is clearly understood, drop the basket and all may be lost. FLNG as a concept is not cheap, on the contrary, but what makes it economically attractive is that you have a reusable functional asset, a very large vessel, which being portable, can disconnect from its seabed anchor system when the field is depleted and relocate to begin all over again in another offshore gas field along with the redeployment of its seabed anchor system. No ongoing costs related to recovering pipelines, abandoning a fixed offshore installation, or removing plant and returning many acres onshore to the condition it was in prior to the construction of the onshore plant. read more

Floating LNG (FLNG) production plants are approximately the size of four football pitches. Garda watchdog finalises investigation into Belmullet garda booze allegations

Screen Shot 2014-02-21 at 16.11.57Extract from an article by Áine Ryan published in The Mayo News Tuesday 8 July 2014

THE Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) has confirmed to The Mayo News it is finalising its report about allegations by a former Shell contractor that Belmullet gardaí were given booze bribes. The allegations by services company, OSSL, have been reported in local, national and international media and were the subject of an internal inquiry by Shell and two Garda investigations.

Mr Desmond Kane, of OSSL, has claimed his company was instructed by Shell personnel to deliver a large amount of alcohol to Belmullet Garda Station before Christmas 2007. Shell has rejected the claim. However, Mr Kane says that, because of a dispute with the company, he was never paid for this delivery. He says he did get paid for earlier, smaller booze deliveries and other ‘sweeteners’ to local people. read more

Greenpeace’s Lego Video Aims To End Shell Partnership

Greenpeace’s most recent video targets popular toy brand Lego for its partnership with Shell. Shell ‘short sighted’ on climate risk – study

In a letter to shareholders in May, Shell dismissed as “alarmist” warnings that global action to mitigate climate change could destroy the value of its assets.

There’s no company that is feeling the pain more than Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-B ) . Shell’s CEO, Ben van Beurden previously described the company’s refining sector results as “unacceptable.” It’s easy to see why.

During the first quarter of this year, Shell revealed a $2.9 billion charge to earnings, mainly due to writedowns on its refineries in Asia and Europe reflecting a poor outlook for refining margins.

What’s more, during the quarter the company’s downstream division reported a year-on-year slump in earnings of 15%, mainly as a result of tighter refining margins. read more

Shell sails ahead without UK shale

Extracts from an article by Andrew Critchlow published in The Sunday Telegraph on 6 July 2014

Screen Shot 2014-02-10 at 16.29.29Shale gas is likely to play an increasingly important role in powering Britain’s growth but don’t expect the country’s largest oil and gas company, Royal Dutch Shell, to help create a fracking-led energy revolution. Andrew Brown, director of upstream international business and the man responsible for the main revenue-generating side of Britain’s most valuable company, is sceptical about the potential for shale oil and gas development in Britain. Outside North America, Shell’s main focus on what Brown calls “unconventional” oil and gas is in China and Russia. The company is also looking at Ukraine and drilling in Turkey, but using North America as a benchmark, the UK is nowhere near the Anglo-Dutch company’s list of viable prospects. read more

HOUSTON (Reuters) – The nation’s largest refinery hit a throughput milestone last week, processing 615,000 barrels in one day for the first time since a series of setbacks that followed its $10 billion expansion, sources familiar with operations said. The 2.5 percent increase in crude oil intake one day in late June, trumpeted in a company email, showed the continuing impacts of a troubled start-up after the expansion, the sources said. “If it had been built better, if it had been designed better, it could be running more crude,” said one of the sources. A Motiva official declined to comment. read more

Guess it was only a matter of time. I now await the appropriate fat cat financial package with a multi-million pension pot.

A YEAR ago, one of the world’s biggest oil and gas projects, the massive Kashagan field in Kazakhstan’s part of the Caspian Sea, was on the verge of starting production after more than a decade of development and US$40 billion in costs.

Its backers, a combination of international oil companies ExxonMobil, Shell, Total, Eni, Japan’s Inpex, the China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) and Kazakhstan’s state-owned KazMunaiGas, had every expectation Kashagan would be producing as much as 8 million tonnes of oil this year, equivalent to 170,000 barrels a day. read more

Shell launches invasion of the playroom, Greenpeace says.

EXTRACTS

LONDON, July 1 (UPI) –Advocacy group Greenpeace International took a swipe Tuesday at LEGO for putting the logo of Royal Dutch Shell on its children’s toys.

Greenpeace published a 15-page pamphlet expressing concern over a decision by LEGO to put Shell images on toys available at service stations operated by the energy company.

The advocacy group said Shell is building brand loyalty with the next generation of consumers, business leaders and politicians.

“This co-promotion is extremely worrying,” Greenpeace said in a statement. “Shell has launched an insidious invasion of children’s playrooms in order to prop up its public image.” read more

Cosan SA (CSAN3), which controls top producer Raizen Energia SA in a joint venture with Royal Dutch Shell Plc, is cutting investments in sugar cane amid a global glut of the sweetener and Brazilian government policies that hold down the price of ethanol, Chief Financial Officer Marcelo Martins said in an interview. Returns on capital from the company’s sugar and ethanol operations have plunged to below 10 percent, he said. Cosan is hunkering down in the industry where it began as it carries out a four-year expansion into gasoline and natural-gas distribution, service stations and railroads. read more
