Qatar Shell hosted a reception at The St Regis Doha last week to bid farewell to Royal Dutch Shell CEO Peter Voser, who is to retire from the company at the end of March 2014 after 29 years of service. The reception also welcomed the new CEO-designate, Ben van Beurden, who will take over from Voser on January 1, 2014.
Van Beurden has worked for Shell’s upstream and downstream businesses in Europe, Africa, Asia and the United States. The event was hosted by Wael Sawan, managing director and chairman of Qatar Shell.
Guests attending the reception included Qatar Museums Authority Chairperson HE Sheikha al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, HE the Chairman of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, HE the Minister of Energy and Industry Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada, Qatar Petroleum directors, heads of other international oil companies, ambassadors and other guests.
Qatar Shell also used the occasion to donate a model of the Seashell Rig drilling platform to Qatar, to be showcased at the new National Museum of Qatar. It holds a unique place in Qatar’s history as it discovered two of Qatar’s earliest offshore oil fields – Idd Al Sharqi and Mayden Mahzen.
“We thank Qatar Shell for the gifts given to the National Museum, which will take its rightful place in one of the most exciting museums being built in the world today,” said HE Sheikha Mayassa. “These gifts provide tangible evidence of the importance of oil and gas in the development of the nation and we are proud to add them to the collection of the National Museum of Qatar.”
“Tonight we celebrate Voser’s tenure at Royal Dutch Shell and his many contributions to Qatar,” said HE al-Attiyah. “We warmly welcome Van Beurden and look forward to continuing our partnership with Shell Qatar.”
“Shell is extremely proud to be a partner with Qatar Petroleum and Qatar. The visit of Voser and Van Beurden exemplifies the importance we place on these relationships. While we extend our warmest wishes to Peter on his retirement, we also look forward to Ben’s leadership in helping Shell serve as a reliable long-term partner in Qatar’s continued progress,” said Sawan.
The original Seashell Rig drilling platform was constructed in 1959. It was designed to drill wells to a depth of 15,000ft in up to 90ft of water and could withstand up to 30ft waves and 100-miles-per-hour winds. The model showcases the pioneering work that was done in collaboration between Qatar Petroleum and Qatar Shell to support the offshore exploration and production efforts in the early 1960s in Qatar.
Separately, Shell also released to Qatar the rights to historic film footage of the early days of Qatar’s offshore oil and gas industry, dating back to the 1950s. The films are titled Island of Steel, Seashell and Land of Dew.

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
