Shell charged over safety lapses in Pulau Bukom fire

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has filed a charge against Shell for lapses in workplace safety following investigations into a fire that broke out at the oil giant’s Pulau Bukom refinery last September.

The fire was caused by lapses such as an accumulation of flammable vapours and static charges, MOM said.

The Ministry said Shell had allowed an open draining method to be used during a process called de-oiling, which is used in the maintenance of pipelines.

The method allowed flammable vapours to be released into the air, and the accumulation of such vapours created an atmosphere that would easily be ignited by any ignition source. read more

Plight of Niger Delta, by Dutch citizens

‘WE have rarely been so touched or felt so loved by a group of people we only just met. Oil and Gas in the Crosshairs

By Jeff Moore, Muir Analytics

Energy companies are increasingly conducting up and downstream business in areas where they wouldn’t have gone 10 years ago – low intensity conflict zones (LICs), to be specific. The lure of profits is too great. But the physical, financial, and PR risks can be high. As Steve Coll’s recent book, Private Empire, points out, energy companies such as ExxonMobil have an increasingly critical need for threat intelligence and security not only to protect their people and assets in LICs, but also to make sound business decisions on where and where not to drill and refine. read more

Shell Drill Rig Arrives In Chukchi Sea

By Dan Fiorucci Channel 2 News9:29 p.m. AKDT, September 2, 2012 ANCHORAGE, Alaska—

After 6 years of planning, and $4.5 billion in expenditures, the Shell Drilling Rig “Noble Discoverer” is tonight (Sunday) just 10 miles from its goal.

After an 8-day-journey from Dutch Harbor, the vessel now sits in the Chukchi Sea — and is preparing to attach itself to 8 anchors that have already been prepositioned on the sea bottom by the Shell support vessel “Nanuq”.

Late this afternoon, Shell officials were elated to finally be so close to their goal — especially after such a large investment of time and money. “As you might imagine,” said Shell spokesman Curtis Smith, “there’s a tremendous amount of enthusiasm around this project right now. Our job is to focus that energy onto taking this next important step — in a way that’s safe for everyone involved.” read more

Americans rate oil and gas industry worst in Gallup Poll

BY FRANK NEWPORT

PRINCETON, New Jersey — Americans continue to give the computer industry the most positive ratings out of 25 business and industry sectors tested, with the restaurant industry in second place. The oil and gas industry and the federal government have the least positive images, as they did last year.

Gallup has asked Americans each August since 2001 to indicate whether they have positive or negative views of a list of business and industry sectors. The 2012 update is from Gallup’s Aug. 9-12 Work and Education survey. read more
