Royal Dutch Shell hires Debevoise silk as next legal chief

5 October 2010 | By Luke McLeod-Roberts

Royal Dutch Shell has appointed a new legal director to take over from incumbent Beat Hess, who retires in January 2011.

Debevoise European chair of litigation Lord Goldsmith QC said: “Peter leaves the litigation department immeasurably stronger than when he joined. We’ll miss him but we’ll be continuing to build on the work he has so successfully done.”

This comes after The Lawyer reported that managing counsel, exploration and production for Shell UK David Isenegger is leaving the company’s Aberdeen office to become general counsel at Centrica Energy (13 September 2010). read more

The report added, however, that Shell’s activities in Iran didn’t explicitly violate sanctions imposed by the United States and European Union on Iran’s energy sector.

The U.S. State Department said last week that BP and Shell are no longer selling jet fuel to Iran Air, while Shell, Total, Spanish energy company Repsol and Italy’s Eni all abandoned work in the upstream sector. read more

NEW YORK, Oct 04, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) today applauded the European oil firms Total, Statoil, Eni, and Royal Dutch Shell for pledging to comply with U.S. sanctions and end investments in Iran, but called for further action. These companies must end all business dealings in Iran.

It was reported last week by The Guardian that Royal Dutch Shell has continued its trade in crude oil with Iran. UANI calls on Royal Dutch Shell to clarify and make transparent the full extent and nature of its business in Iran.

Responding to the actions of these companies, UANI President, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace said: read more
