Quebec Federation of Labour urging boycott of Shell stations on Friday

From The Canadian Press, June 07, 2010 – 6:21 p.m

MONTREAL – Quebec’s largest union group is urging consumers to boycott Shell Canada’s gas stations for 24 hours later this week to protest the company’s decision to close a Montreal refinery.

The Quebec Federation of Labour wants motorists to show solidarity on Friday with the 500 workers, all but 30 of whom will lose their jobs when Shell shutters the refinery and converts it into a distribution terminal.

The union says it’ll also be present at the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix this weekend, handing out pamphlets at the Formula One event.

The union wants the company to go back to the negotiating table with two potential buyers for the refinery.

There were reports on Monday that Shell had indeed gone back to the table, but a company spokesman said that was untrue and the decision taken last week to close the refinery is final.

Shell Canada is a unit of Royal Dutch Shell Group (NYSE:RDS.A), the British-Dutch energy giant that is one of the world’s biggest oil and gas companies, with operations spanning the globe.
