Oct. 3 (Bloomberg) — Greenpeace activists occupied three stacks at Royal Dutch Shell Plcs Scotford site in Canada to protest against the extraction of oil sands.
Nineteen activists from Canada, France, Brazil and Australia scaled an upgrader that Shell is building on the site to convert oil sands into fuel, Greenpeace said in a statement. Two protesters have been detained, Greenpeace said.
The Scotford Upgrader processes crude bitumen from oil sands mined in the region into a range of synthetic crude oils. Its located next to Shells Canadian Scotford Refinery near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.
Shell said it is working with the Canadian police and that government authorities are being notified.
Due to the weekend timing, no construction is currently taking place, the company said in a statement. We reiterate our wish that Greenpeace and all others who have concerns with our activities would talk to us face to face instead of using confrontational and unsafe tactics.
Production at the refinery and upgrader are not affected, Shell said.

Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
