Wanted: Rooms for rent, must float

ExxonMobil Canada has gone on a search for floating living accommodations to hitch up to its Thebaud production platform at the Sable natural gas project.

ExxonMobil, which operates the Sable energy project and owns 50.8 per cent, is looking for expressions of interest to provide a suitable unit to support the project’s maintenance program.

ExxonMobil spokesman Merle MacIsaac said Monday the Sable gas field is approaching a decade of operation.

Mr. MacIsaac said there is ongoing maintenance on the production platform, but this work would be “extra we do now that we are into this phase of the project.”

The production platform has gas production facilities that require additional attention and inspections.

ExxonMobil plans to lease the unit, which would accommodate up to 60 people and be available from April 2009 until October 2009.

Some of the specifications ExxonMobil is looking for include being able to connect to the production platform via a personnel bridge; a helideck with refuelling capabilities; able to operate in 29 metres of water; adjoining office space; and crane capability.

Mr. MacIsaac did not discuss potential costs of leasing such a unit, but sources have suggested it would be several million dollars.

Deadline for expressions of interest is July 11.

Sable, located 250 kilometres off Nova Scotia, went into production on New Year’s Eve, 1999. Original predictions were that gas reserves would last until 2024.

However, expectations have been scaled back, and estimates of the reserves’ depletion date range from 2013 to 2017.

The project produces over 400 million cubic feet of natural gas a day, which is piped to Atlantic Canada and New England.
