Glass ceiling or glass elevator? While the debate rages about the role of women in business – see headhunter Heather McGregor’s FT Magazine cover story on ft.com – two senior women have hopped into the elevator at British American Tobacco. Karen de Segundo , who retired as president of Shell Hydrogen in 2005, and Christine Morin-Postel , former chief executive of Société Générale de Belgique and chief executive of Credisuez, are the newest recruits.

Ms de Segundo has several non-executive directorships including Merrill Lynch New Energy Technology and Lonmin, and is on the supervisory board of Ahold.

Ms Morin-Postel is also an über non-executive, with board positions at Royal Dutch Shell, Alcan and 3i. It remains to be seen whether BAT’s management will follow Jan du Plessis , chairman, to appoint a few female executives on its management board.
