KUALA LUMPUR: More than 1,000 primary and secondary students participated in Shell’s 50th National Traffic Games 2007 yesterday.
A sum of RM2.5 million was invested by Shell Malaysia to organise the event which involved 40,000 students from 34 schools nationwide who went through district and state rounds.
The annual road safety competition culminated with the national finals held at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s Traffic Garden at the Titiwangsa Lake Gardens, here.
The competition was a joint effort by Shell Malaysia, the state Road Safety Council, the Education Ministry, the police and other government agencies.
Shell Malaysia chairman Datuk Saw Choo Boon said the objective of the event was to increase awareness among youth towards creating a positive culture and having the right attitude on the road. Dubbed the Shell Traffic Games, the competition was inaugurated in 1957. It is one of the longest-running corporate social responsibility programmes which has “graduated” more than one million young Malaysian road users to date.
The closing ceremony was officiated by Federal Territory Road Transport Department director Nadzri Siron, who said the games fostered integration while allowing youth to learn about traffic rules. Meanwhile, Federal Territory Education director Abas Awang said the ministry had included road safety guidelines as part of the main curriculum for Standard One pupils from this year as many road accidents involved the younger generation.
The students competed in debates, written traffic tests, quiz, pedal-car, cycling and pedestrian categories during the three-day finals.
The overall champion went to the Kuala Lumpur contingent while the contingents from Kedah and Kelantan emerged first and second runners-up respectively. The winning teams took home a trophy, team medals and prize money of RM10,000, RM7,000 and RM5,000, respectively.

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
