Orion Group, the Inverness-based recruitment agency, is looking for more than 200 engineers from the Highlands and Grampian, to work on Sakhalin Island, off Russia’s Pacific coast.
The group has secured a three-year contract worth $150m (£76m) to supply skilled personnel to the Sakhalin Energy Investment Company, for the construction of a $10bn energy infrastructure on the island.
The project is to support a 20-year deal with Tokyo Gas to supply power to Japan’s capital and will see the establishment of a network of offshore platforms, linked to the southern tip of the island. A new liquefied natural gas plant, export terminal and an oil terminal will be constructed there.
Sakhalin Energy, owned by Shell and Russian giant Gazprom, has been forced to embark on the huge project because the present oil facility at Sakhalin is icebound in winter and is only in production during the summer months.
Orion chairman and founder Alan Savage said: “This is the first liquefied natural gas plant to be built in Russia. The Sakhalin resource will guarantee supplying over nine million tonnes a year for at least 25 years to Sakhalin Energy’s key markets in the growing economies of Asia.
“We have just completed our first three year contract for Sakhalin, won in the face of fierce international competition, and we’re greatly excited and encouraged at securing the new award through to the end of 2010.
“The $150m over the period is our largest single contract, and our success reinforces my view that we can sustain and expand a global business from our base in the Highlands.”
Orion is putting the finishing touches to a £4m extension to its Inverness HQ, where 50 jobs are being created.

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
