ITAR-TASS: Strong earthquake on Kuriles, Sakhalin possible

02.04.2007, 15.34

MOSCOW, April 2 (Itar-Tass) – A probability of a strong earthquake on Kuriles and Sakhalin in April remains, an official of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry’s information department told Itar-Tass on Monday.

The high seismic activity in the area of the Kurile Range is related to aftershocks events after a violent earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean east of the Simushir Island.

The magnitude of the quake was 8.

Besides, the activity of Shiveluch, Bezymyanny and Klyuchevskoy volcanoes remains high.

Their ash discharges pose a danger for flights of local airlines.

At an increase in the activity of Klyuchevskoy, lava effusion, mud and rock slides are possible, the ministry’s official said.

Two tremors were registered on Monday off the Iturup Island on Monday.

According to the data of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station, the tremors measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale occurred at 18:52 local time (11:52 Moscow time) in an area 130 kilometers from the city of Kurilsk.

There is no danger of a tsunami, a spokesman at the Sakhalin Tsunami Center told Itar-Tass.

An 8.1-magnitude earthquake hit the Solomon Islands on Monday, sending a tsunami.

Earthquakes off the Kurile Island have been almost incessant since last year’s November. There have been over 630 quakes in this area since then, but none were destructive.
