PETALING JAYA: The increasing demand for energy and the challenge to produce better oil makes it essential to use Smart Fields oil recovery technology, said Shell Smart Fields programme manager Jaap van Ballegooijen.
Van Ballegooijen projected the world’s consumption at 120 million barrels per day by 2025, but added that remote and complex developments could mean heavier or poorer quality oil could be produced.
Speaking via webcast yesterday, he said there was also a need to develop oil in a more environmentally responsible way, but the positive side was Shell already knew “where most of the oil is” and was producing it.
“There is a need to improve recovery and production performance to serve the demand for energy in the future. We require activity integration, real-time data acquisition and the ability to reconfigure oil well architecture.
“Smart Fields provides these qualities,” van Ballegooijen said, adding that this would only translate into better value-to-investment ratios.
He said with Smart Fields technology, an oil field manager could afford to employ 90% fewer staff, but then human workers would still be needed to maintain and run offshore oil plants.
Judging from the fact that “all oil fields in Brunei are now Smart Fields” and the technology is also being used extensively in east Malaysia, he said this proved that Smart Fields are “the way to go”.

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
