Media-Newswire.com: Attorney General Asks Shell Oil President To Abandon Broadwater Project At Meeting

(Media-Newswire.com) – Attorney General Richard Blumenthal asked Shell Oil Company President John Hofmeister during a face-to-face meeting today to drop his company’s proposal to build the Broadwater liquefied natural gas facility ( LNG ) in Long Island Sound. Shell is a partner in Broadwater with TransCanada.

“I urged Shell’s president today to abandon Broadwater,” Blumenthal said. “Natural gas is a clean effective fuel, but this location is worst case, worst place – an environmental atrocity and a tempting terrorist target. There are better, safer alternatives – areas in Maine and Massachusetts, as well as Virginia and Maryland, where Shell already has the right to build.

“As I stated to Mr. Hofmeister, we will fight this misguided project as long and as hard as necessary to protect our citizens and Long Island Sound. We will go to court in battling this ill-advised and unneeded project.

“I support construction of LNG facilities in areas away from heavily used and environmentally fragile areas. Recent approvals of two LNG facilities in Massachusetts assure Connecticut a plentiful natural gas supply, making Broadwater unnecessary, expensive and unwise.

“I hope that Mr. Hofmeister does the right thing and pulls the plug on this ill-conceived, unnecessary and dangerous project. Mr. Hofmeister has the power – which I urged him to exercise – to kill this proposal, showing that Shell is a good corporate citizen that listens to reason.

“Shell cannot deny the facts: A monstrous, floating platform four football fields long brimming with combustible natural gas in an environmentally sensitive area close to populated areas and busy shipping lanes makes no sense. It is clearly a recipe for environmental and human disaster.”
