Bloomberg: Power Outage Causes Flaring at Shell Refinery, California Says

By Robert Tuttle

March 5 (Bloomberg) — A power outage at Royal Dutch Shell Plc.’s refinery in Wilmington, California, caused the release of chemicals into the air early today, according to a report on a state-administered Web site.

A company spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

The refinery has the capacity to process 98,500 barrels of crude oil a day, according to U.S. Energy Department data.

Dow Jones Newswires reported on Feb. 28 that a gasoline- production unit at the plant will be shut March 1 for about five weeks of planned maintenance.

On Jan. 29, Tesoro Corp., the second-largest refiner in the Western U.S., agreed to buy the plant and 250 filling stations for $1.63 billion. The largest refiner in the West is Chevron Corp.
