KUCHING – Shell Malaysia is placing importance in its investment in Sarawak and would continue to do so as currently it has invested some 90 per cent of its RM70 billion investment in oil exploration and production in Bintulu in the state.
Its chairman Saw Choon Boon said at the Shell Kenyalang Press Awards here recently that “Sarawak continues to be the heartland of our exploration and production business and a key area of operations.”
“With the hub of our business in Sarawak, there are also many leading Sarawakians in top positions in Shell. Bintulu is also the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the world and that helps to put Sarawak in the map,” he said.
“Sarawak’s importance (to Shell) is also unquestionable,” he stressed, adding that Shell’s presence in the State began in Miri in the 1890s with the sales of kerosene.
“Kerosene was our first business in Malaysia and that began in Miri in 1910. After 115 years of cooperation and I hope many more to come, Malaysia, in particular, Sarawak, has grown to become a very important part to the Shell group,” he said.
He added that the company’s social responsibility programmes in the state are also “many and diverse.”
Saw cited the Awards as its support for Sarawak’s media fraternity which he described as “vibrant, responsible media” and “Shell is committed to be here for a long time.”

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
