BP and Shell have both made extravagant claims in multimillion dollar global advertising campaigns about their lofty business ethics and undying commitment to the environment.
The reality is rather different. Many of their own workers lives have been lost in recent years due to management giving a higher priority to production and profits than the safety of their workers (e.g. Shell Brent Bravo).
Both companies have also admitted (only after being cornered as a result of an investigation by The Sunday Times), using undercover agents against NGO’s campaigning against their activities.
Both have flouted laws and regulations by causing terrible pollution which has ruined the lives of people living near to their production facilities (e.g. Shell’s notorious track record in Nigeria).
For many decades Shell and BP traded as a single entity in the UK under the name of Shell-Mex & BP Limited. Perhaps some of the shared corporate culture lives on today.
The propaganda campaigns of both of these multinational giants have been exposed as nothing more than corporate trickery designed to deceive a gullible public.
Despite the gross incompetence (which has been revealed for the whole world to see) and blatant disregard of ethical norms, some senior management figures in these companies have been rewarded by titles and untold riches e.g. “Lord” Browne of BP and the now disgraced former Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell, “Sir” Philip Watts.
(Sir Philip reportedly received a severance package/pension worth $18.5 million after being blamed for the reserves scandal which ruined Shell’s reputation.)

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.

I wonder if the sudden avalanche of dirt being published about BP has anything to do with Shell’s efforts to defend itself against a takeover…
