So much for the Schengen border-free zone and European financial harmonisation. Regulatory hurdles are blocking investors domiciled not only in the US, Japan and New Zealand, but also in Italy, from participating in one of the year’s biggest share offers.

Thursday July 14, 2005

AN initiative by Communications, Marine and Natural Resources Minister Noel Dempsey to break the deadlock in the case of the “Rossport Five” has so far failed. The men are currently in prison for contempt of court arising from the proposed onshore Corrib gas pipeline being installed by Shell, resulting in continuing protests in support of their stance in the West.

Mr Dempsey has been working through an intermediary, IFA vice-president Raymond O’Malley, for the past week to try to broker a deal which would lead to the five Mayo farmers purging their contempt. read more

Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources Noel Dempsey is commissioning a new safety review of the controversial Corrib onshore gas pipeline in Co Mayo, in a bid to end the standoff which has seen five north Mayo residents in prison for contempt of court over the past fortnight.

Shell E&P, which plans to build the pipeline, has also given an undertaking to Mr Dempsey that no work will take place on the pipeline “for the present”. The company welcomed the Minister’s intervention last night, and said it hoped that it might lead to a situation where the five men got out of prison. “Only then can reasonable dialogue begin,” a company spokesman said. read more

“The fiasco over Shell’s gas pipeline in Mayo highlights the importance of senior executives communicating with the community.”

Thursday July 14, 2005

FINANCIAL theory teaches that our duty is to maximise shareholders’ returns. In practice, we have many commercial relationships that last longer and run deeper than those with most stockholders.

Shareholders and executives are not the only stakeholders. We need to keep workers, customers and even the public on side.

The fiasco over Shell’s gas pipeline in Mayo highlights the importance of senior executives communicating with the community. People form impressions early and most are slow to adjust. read more

“Mayo TJerry Cowley (Ind) has criticised the move, however, while welcoming the Minister’s direction to Shell to suspend all work on the pipeline route.”

Lorna Siggins, Marine Correspondent

Legal representatives of the five north Mayo men imprisoned over their opposition to the Shell onshore gas pipeline have described as “significant” last night’s announcement of a new safety review by Minister for the Marine Noel Dempsey.

Mayo TJerry Cowley (Ind) has criticised the move, however, while welcoming the Minister’s direction to Shell to suspend all work on the pipeline route.

“Unless the Minister bites the bullet and directs that an offshore terminal be built, the safety concerns in north Mayo will not be met,” Dr Cowley said. read more

Thursday 14 July 2005

July 14 (Bloomberg) — Royal Dutch/Shell Group’s oil and gas project in Russia’s Far East may cost $20 billion, 67 percent more than originally planned, because of soaring metal prices and contractor fees and a declining U.S. dollar.

Deliveries of liquefied natural gas are now expected to start in the summer of 2008, the company said in a statement today, some eight months behind schedule. The project at Sakhalin island is the largest foreign direct investment anywhere in Russia. Shell shares pared gains in London after the statement. read more
