DANIEL BALINT-KURTI

Militants in southern Nigeria have released two German and four Nigerian oil workers they had taken hostage, a local government official said.

“They were released unconditionally,” said Preye Wariowei, a spokesman for the Nigerian state of Bayelsa, where the workers subcontracted to Shell were seized by gunmen on Wednesday. He said the two Germans were now in the care of their direct employer, German firm Bilfinger Berger.

Wariowei said the hostages were unharmed. read more

By REUTERS

LAGOS (Reuters) – Two German and four Nigerian oil workers kidnapped by militants in Nigeria’s southern delta were released on Saturday after three days in captivity, a state government spokesman said.

The six employees of oil services company Bilfinger-Berger, a contractor for Royal Dutch Shell were abducted on Wednesday by a little-known ethnic group pressing the oil giant for jobs and development in the impoverished wetlands region.

“The six were handed over to the deputy governor by the king and the people of the community. They are OK apart from the psychological trauma they have been through,” a state government spokesman said by phone from Yenegoa, the Bayelsa state capital. read more

Bloomberg: Shell-Oman Venture Boosts Oil Reserves, Slows Field Decline

Bloomberg: Shell-Oman Venture Boosts Oil Reserves, Slows Field Decline

Sunday 19 June 2005

June 19 (Bloomberg) — Royal Dutch/Shell Group, Europe’s second-largest oil company, last year boosted reserves from its joint venture in Oman and slowed the rate of decline at maturing fields, the company said in its annual report.

“The field development plans for Lekhwair and Nimr yielded increases in reserves that more than offset the decreases in the reserves” of six other fields, Petroleum Development Oman said in the report on its Web site. The company didn’t provide a total figure for the increase. read more

Helicopter carrying Shell employees crashes in sea, all 13 on board survive

AP Worldstream: Report: Helicopter carrying Shell employees crashes in sea, all 13 on board survive

Jun 19, 2005

A helicopter carrying employees of oil giant Shell crashed in the sea near an offshore rig in the South China Sea, but all 13 occupants including a Briton and two New Zealanders survived without major injuries, a news report said.

The Super Puma EC225 helicopter, with two pilots and 11 Shell Malaysia employees aboard, went down Saturday after nearly completing its one-hour flight from Miri in Sarawak state on Borneo island to the company’s rig, the New Sunday Times reported.

It said the occupants, who were wearing life jackets, evacuated the aircraft before it sank and were rescued by a passing boat. The helicopter was one of three contracted from Malaysia Helicopter Services, a private company, to Shell Malaysia. read more

Fiddling as the planet burns: There is nothing left to debate about climate change. It is happening and each of us must act

The Observer (UK): Fiddling as the planet burns: There is nothing left to debate about climate change. It is happening and each of us must act

Sunday 19 June 2005

Henry Porter

Sunday June 19, 2005

The great lie in the climate debate is that there is still a debate worth having. Opponents of change insist that the human factors in global warming are not proven and that we must wait until we have hard evidence before taking drastic action, which is as about as silly as saying there are two equally valid views on the issue of whether paedophilia damages children.

What is so destructive about this stance is that it claims equal weight and equal airtime. The ‘balance’ in newspaper reports, especially in the United States, is, in fact, a bias against the truth and weakens the case for immediate action against emissions of C02. And while we hum and haw, trying to persuade reluctant sceptics, the permafrost of the Arctic melts, sea levels inch up and the pH levels of oceans gradually drop because of the carbon that is absorbed from the atmosphere. read more

EBRD freezes Shell Sakhalin loan

The Observer (UK): EBRD freezes Shell Sakhalin loan

Nick Mathiason

Sunday June 19, 2005

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is refusing to fund Shell’s vital $12 billion Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project off the east coast of Russia until problems with the environmental impact of the pipeline’s construction are resolved.

The news is a serious blow to Shell, which needs to finalise funding quickly so it can begin the building of liquefied natural gas platforms and terminals. Sakhalin-2 will generate $45bn worth of energy and is vital for the future of the embattled firm. read more

No Brits, Dutch or Yanks – we’re Shell

The Observer (UK): No Brits, Dutch or Yanks – we’re Shell: “Who will become permanent chairman of Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil giant fallen on hard times?”

Frank Kane

Sunday June 19, 2005

Who will become permanent chairman of Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil giant fallen on hard times? The answer is no nearer today than it was many months ago, when Dutchman Aad Jacobs was first named as temporary head of the restructured group, but some worrying hints are coming out of the notoriously opaque organisation.

People in the know believe that Egon Zender, the head-hunting firm commissioned with the task of finding the right man, has been told to rule out a British or Dutch candidate on the grounds that would upset the delicate balance of power between the two nationalities. But in a more worrying development, EZ has also been told to rule out an American. Shell is a European standard-bearer, it is said, and must therefore have a European at its head. read more

High oil prices are here to stay

THE SUNDAY TIMES (UK): High oil prices are here to stay

19 June 2005

WHILE the world’s leaders and finance ministers have been concerning themselves with issues such as African poverty, other matters have not disappeared from the agenda. Last weekend in London, the Group of Seven finance ministers expressed their “significant concern” about high oil prices, warning they were hampering economic growth.

On cue, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) said on Wednesday it was raising production quotas by 500,000 barrels a day to 28m from July 1. That is unlikely, however, to produce an early drop in prices, which hit a record of $58.45 a barrel in New York on Friday. Opec, having abandoned its old $22-$28-a-barrel target range now seems relaxed about these higher prices. Demand for oil is strong and supply is limited. read more

Trackers look top-heavy as Shell doubles up

THE SUNDAY TIMES (UK): Trackers look top-heavy as Shell doubles up

19 June 2005

ONE of the biggest shares in the FTSE 100 is about to double in size, creating a dilemma for investors with index tracker funds, writes David Budworth.

Royal Dutch/Shell, which is listed on the Dutch and UK stock exchanges, will seek shareholder approval later this month to list solely in London. Shell will make up 6% of the Footsie instead of just over 3% now.

Some advisers are worried that this will make the index too concentrated and dependent on a few companies and sectors, which could blunt returns from tracker funds. read more
