Shell IT outsourcing to AT&T, T-SYS and EDS becoming the mother of all skeletons in the cupboard

FROM AN INSIDER, A FEW WORDS ABOUT SHELL CIO ALAN MATULA

John, please add this to the IT string GSAP/GPMR: THE MARCH OF THE DINOSAURS…

Matula has been mentioned a few times in this string of posts. He was the ‘brain’ (meant cynically) behind the complete outsourcing of IT business last year. That was another ‘spectacular’ from him and earned him promotion.

Yet again a very big promise and great underdelivery and as we all know, this is the key to succes in modern Shell. It now is such a mess that even the helpdesks do not function anymore. We have 3 partners that are quite disconnected and have no idea what the others are doing. read more

Shell is ordered to re-route ‘risky’ Corrib gas pipeline

GAS from the controversial Corrib field off Co Mayo will not come ashore until at least 2011, 15 years after it was first discovered. The disclosure came after An Bord Pleanala ordered oil giant Shell E&P Ltd to redesign the pipeline and move it away from homes because it poses an "unacceptable risk". Residents gave a cautious welcome yesterday after Shell was ordered to re-route the pipeline for a third time.

Saudi Aramco seeks solution to crude problem

Most of the world’s refineries were designed to take lighter, sweeter crudes, which are now in short supply. According to BP, as much as two thirds of the world’s crude oil supply is now sour. New refineries with expensive desulpherisation units and hydrocrackers are chasing the “sour” discount, hoping to make more profit margin buying cheaper, heavier crude oil. A refinery such as Shell’s Stanlow plant in Cheshire is designed to process expensive North Sea crude; it is no wonder that Shell wants to sell its last British fuel plant.

It’s a dirty business — the new gold rush that is blackening Canada’s name

The sands contain 174 billion barrels of proven reserves, the world’s second-largest reserves after Saudi Arabia. With improved techniques, Canada hopes to extract between 315 billion and 1.7 trillion barrels.

A Co-operative Bank study calculated that, even if all other carbon dioxide emissions stopped, fully exploiting the tar sands would still tip the world into catastrophic climate change by raising global temperatures more than 2C above pre-industrial levels.
