money.cnn.com: Argentina Seeks Arrest For Shell Executives – Report
August 19, 2007: 11:30 AM EST
BUENOS AIRES (Dow Jones)-The Argentine government’s price controllers are seeking arrest warrants for top executives at the local unit of Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB.LN), apparently on the grounds that the company has failed to adequately supply the local fuels market, Argentine daily La Nacion reported Sunday.
Government and company officials weren’t immediately available for comment amid the long weekend. Monday is a national holiday.
The apparent request, made to a judge by the government’s price control point man, Commerce Secretary Guillermo Moreno, comes after a string of government measures against Shell that began in March 2005, when President Nestor Kirchner called on Argentines to boycott Shell stations for lifting prices, a move followed by the local unit of Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM).

Fortune Teller: Royal Dutch/Shell spent decades pioneering a system of scenario planning called TINA (There Is No Alternative) to anticipate dramatic changes in the world. Now your company can come up with its own TINA.

Betty Sue Flowers, editor of the Shell scenarios, says that every organization could benefit from having its own TINA. “Sit down and ask, What are the predetermined elements in my business? Where is the TINA? There is no alternative — just saying it elicits alternatives that people may not have thought about before. TINA gets you out of the box that you’ve put yourself in.”

THE Royal Bank of Scotland is at the centre of the climate change crisis because of its funding of the aviation, oil and gas industries, campaigners claim. They say its investment in fossil fuels last year involved 44 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
The bank is also accused of threatening to displace communities in the Niger Delta in Africa by working to source funding for a massive gas project involving Shell.

The New York Times: Seeing Corporate Fingerprints in Wikipedia Edits

Last year a Wikipedia visitor edited the entry for the SeaWorld theme parks to change all mentions of “orcas” to “killer whales,” insisting that this was a more accurate name for the species.
There was another, unexplained edit: a paragraph about criticism of SeaWorld’s “lack of respect toward its orcas” disappeared. Both changes, it turns out, originated at a computer at Anheuser-Busch, SeaWorld’s owner.
Dozens of similar examples of insider editing came to light last week through WikiScanner, a new Web site that traces the source of millions of changes to Wikipedia, the popular online encyclopedia that anyone can edit.

Business Week: Alaska offshore drilling delayed further
By JEANNETTE J. LEE
ANCHORAGE, Alaska
A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that Royal Dutch Shell PLC must further postpone plans for exploratory oil drilling off the northern coast of Alaska.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also indicated that environmental and Alaska Native groups have a good chance of prevailing in their effort to keep the energy giant out of the Beaufort Sea.
Petitioners, including the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission and the Center for Biological Diversity, have “raised serious questions and demonstrated that the balance of hardships tips sharply in their favor,” the ruling said.
Independent on Sunday: Backing for pipeline ‘endangers whales’
By Amol Rajan
Two environmental groups have accused the British Government of covertly sponsoring Royal Dutch Shell’s Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project off east Russia, which they say is causing major environmental damage and threatening a rare species of whale.
WWF and The Corner House say the Government is seeking judicial review of what they claim is crucial financial support for a project which does not meet official standards on conservation.
Their criticism is focused on a decision by the Export Credit Guarantee Department (ECGD) in March 2004, just months after the beginning of the Sakhalin-2 development, to offer $1bn (£500m) in guarantees to the project to cover the work of two British sub-contractors.
