MONTREAL — Shell Canada (SHC.T) could pay up to $100 million to about 500,000 Quebec drivers after the company and lawyers for the motorists reached an out-of-court settlement, Le Journal de Montreal reported Wednesday the Canadian Press said.

A class-action lawsuit filed last July said Shell Canada put an additive in its Bronze gas between March 2001 and March 2002 that left a residue in gas tanks and caused problems for starting vehicles and determining the exact amount of gas in a tank. read more

MONTREAL (CP) – Shell Canada is disputing a published report it might have to pay up to $100 million to about 500,000 Quebec drivers after an out-of-court settlement between the company and lawyers for motorists.

A Montreal newspaper reported Wednesday the agreement could cost Shell $100 million and is related to a fuel additive the company used in 2001 and 2002. Gordon Kugler, a lawyer who worked for plaintiffs in the suit, said court proceedings were launched because the additive left a residue in gas tanks. read more

CBCNews: Shell to compensate Quebec motorists for damage caused by gas additive

“Hundreds of thousands of Quebec motorists may be eligible to receive money from Shell as part of a settlement of a class-action lawsuit.”

MONTREAL – Hundreds of thousands of Quebec motorists may be eligible to receive money from Shell as part of a settlement of a class-action lawsuit.

Motorists could get anywhere from $20 to $450 in compensation from Shell to pay for damage caused to their vehicles because of an additive in the company’s regular gasoline between March 2001 and March 2002.

The additive left residue at the bottom of gas tanks causing faulty operations.

Reports say as many as 500,000 Quebecers may qualify for part of the settlement, which could cost Shell up to $100 million. read more

A St. James Parish woman is suing Shell Oil and its Motiva Enterprises refinery in Baton Rouge federal court, claiming the high-sulfur gasoline she purchased at a Gonzales station damaged her car.

The class-action lawsuit is the first filed in the Baton Rouge area targeting defective fuel from the Norco refinery that suspended sales at 400 stations just before the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

In the lawsuit, Barbara Dorsey claims she filled her 2003 Nissan Altima with “the tainted Shell gasoline” purchased at the Shell Express One Stop, 2006 W. La. 30, Gonzales, several times in May. read more

More than two weeks after a batch of tainted gasoline caused Shell Oil Co. to temporarily close pumps at nearly 200 gas stations in the New Orleans region, the company has released a list of stations that received the gas from a Shell refinery. But the company still cannot say for sure which stations sold the bad fuel.

Late last week, after repeated requests, Shell released a list of Shell and Texaco stations that received the problem fuel from the Norco refinery operated by Shell’s U.S. refining arm, Motiva Enterprises LLC. But Shell says the list, which includes 162 New Orleans-region stations that received the tainted gas, is not conclusive, and the company issued several qualifying statements along with the list. read more

New Orleans area drivers aren’t the only ones dealing with faulty fuel gauges caused by sulfur in gasoline. Similarly tainted fuel has been reported in at least four other states and in Canada.

Joyce Williams was driving home from work late on the afternoon of May 25 when her Chevrolet pickup truck stalled near the peak of the High Rise bridge over the Industrial Canal in New Orleans.

Williams coasted down the bridge and took the first exit off the highway. Even though Williams’ gas gauge indicated she had more than a quarter of a tank left, she was out of gas. read more

Shell Oil Says It Will Pay For Rental Cars, Towing Fees: Class-Action Lawsuit Seeks More Money For Drivers Stuck With Bad Gas

MIAMI, Fla. — Shell Oil says, it will pay towing fees and car rentals for drivers whose cars were damaged by a bad batch of their gasoline.

Last month, gasoline distributed to Shell, Texaco, and potentially other stations across Florida and Louisiana had excessive sulfur. The sulfur damaged gas gauges on thousands of vehicles, causing them to read “full” even when empty. read more

MIAMI, Fla. — Another day, another lawsuit for Shell Oil. Their gasoline was tainted with elevated sulfur levels and has damaged thousands of cars. The bad gas is gone — but blame is still going around. An attorney is seeking up to $100 million dollars, saying Shell isn’t doing enough to reimburse the real costs of bad gas.

It’s been three weeks since Myriam Valle filled up her Lincoln Town Car at a Miami Shell station. In fact, she still has the receipt. Ever since, her gas gauge has read “full.” read more

While some Shell and Texaco dealers’ fuel sales have returned to normal levels, others claim sales are still off.

The pumps are back on at South Florida Shell and Texaco outlets, but station operators are still feeling the pain from a holiday weekend with no sales.

Fuel-quality problems forced Shell and Texaco station operators to suspend sales anywhere from 1 ½ to four days beginning May 28, putting a huge crimp in station revenues over one of the busiest times of the year for gas retailers. read more

Sulphur harms gas gauges in Florida

Oil giant Shell is reimbursing motorists in Florida for fuel gauge repairs made necessary by contaminated gasoline, something its Canadian subsidiary wouldn’t do here last year.

An official for Shell Oil’s refiner in the United States has confirmed it will start sending cheques today to customers who complained about faulty gauges after buying gas containing corrosive elemental sulphur from the company and Texaco. read more

Palm Beach Post: Shell, Texaco pump again as bad gas replaced

The last of the 420 Shell and Texaco gas stations in South Florida that sold sulfur-laden fuel reopened Wednesday.

All gas supplied by Motiva Enterprises for sale at Shell and Texaco stations in this area has been tested and approved. The contaminated gas also was sold in the New Orleans and Tampa regions.

“Everything is back to normal in all three areas,” Shell spokesman Johan Zaayman said.

About 9,000 consumers in Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana filed claims as of Tuesday, saying that fuel from Shell or Texaco damaged their gas gauges. Zaayman said he could not confirm how many more claims were filed Wednesday. read more
