Electric cars threaten Brunei plan for oil bonanza

by: : 8 Aug 2017

Mohammad Yasmin Umar, energy minister, told the FT that Brunei’s energy production could rise… by 2035 to as high as 800,000.  But he acknowledged this aim could be jeopardised by the world oil price depression — and by possible longer-term trends such as the electric car’s “takeover” from combustion-powered vehicles in rich countries. Brunei Shell Petroleum Company… did not respond to a request for comment on the minister’s remarks. FULL FT ARTICLE read more

Shell CEO Ben van Beurden audience with corrupt despot, the Sultan of Brunei

By John Donovan

Royal Dutch Shell Chief Executive Ben van Beurden had “an audience” on Tuesday with the head of the corrupt, seedy Brunei Royal Family, the Sultan of Brunei, who once accepted a $500,000 wedding gift (bribe) from Royal Dutch Shell.

In April he went ahead, despite international opposition, with his plans to introduce a tough Islamic penal code that under Sharia law will include amputations.

Shell has always been willing to deal with dictators including Adolf Hitler, Muammar Gaddafi and General Sani Abacha. Profits first, ethics last. Shell remains willing to deal with the devil. read more

Extracts from an article by Andrew Buncombe published 30 April 2014 by The Independent

The Sultan of Brunei, an absolute monarch who pays for a garrison of British troops to be stationed is his oil rich nation, will on Thursday dismiss the concerns of human rights campaigners and start imposing sharia law. Many of the laws, which include the dismemberment of limbs and stoning to death, will apply to both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Corrupt Sultan of Brunei introduces tough Islamic penal code

By John Donovan

The head of the corrupt, seedy Brunei Royal Family, the Sultan of Brunei, who once accepted a $500,000 wedding gift from Royal Dutch Shell, has gone ahead with his plans to introduce a penal code that will include amputations.

Extracts from a BBC News article dated 30 April 2014

Brunei will introduce a tough Islamic penal code from Thursday, its leader has announced. Sharia punishments that will include the severing of limbs for theft and death by stoning for adulterers will be brought in over three years. In April, the UN voiced “deep concern” about the planned change. The tiny state, on the island of Borneo, is ruled by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and has grown rich on oil and gas exports. When he announced it last year the Sultan, 67, one of the world’s wealthiest men, called the code “a part of the great history of our nation”. The move sparked a rare strong response on social media. In February the Sultan warned internet users to stop attacking his plans. read more

Shell, the Brunei Royal Family and Sharia Law

His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei meeting Malcolm (TFA) Brinded, Shell’s then Executive Director, Upstream International

There may be some relief by Muslim employees of Shell Brunei at the news that “Brunei has postponed the introduction of tough Islamic criminal punishments that were due to begin on Tuesday.”

Fortunately for Shell, the Sharia code appears vague on the subject of corruption.

Concern as Brunei brings in Islamic law with punishments including dismemberment of limbs and stoning to death

Screen Shot 2014-03-30 at 13.14.58Extracts from an article by Andrew Buncombe published 29 March 2014 by The Independent under the headline: Concern as Brunei brings in system of Islamic law with punishments that include the dismemberment of limbs and stoning to death

The Sultan of Brunei, one of the world’s wealthiest rulers and a close ally of Britain, will this week oversee his country’s transition to a system of Islamic law with punishments that include flogging, the dismemberment of limbs and stoning to death. The speech by the Sultan – who for many years was involved in a high-profile legal battle with his brother, a playboy accused of misappropriating £9bn of government assets and who reportedly owned a yacht called Tits – has had the impact of silencing many who might publicly speak out against the move. They’re the X-rated statues an exiled playboy prince doesn’t want the world to see.

Lawyers for Prince Jefri Bolkiah, the kid brother of the Sultan of Brunei, don’t want jurors to hear anything about his four sex trophies in a blockbuster real estate trial opening next week in Manhattan Supreme Court.

“I’ll tell you what: They make me blush,” said Mark Cymrot, a lawyer for Faith Zaman, the British barrister battling the prince in court. “They’re very explicit.” read more

Alleged fraud involving 10 senior officials of Shell Brunei

By John Donovan

Some strange events at Shell Brunei Petroleum (SBP).

Around four weeks ago we published an email from a senior official of the Brunei government writing from The Chairman’s Office of Shell Brunei Petroleum, explaining the mysterious absence of  the companies Managing Director, Dr Grahaeme Henderson. It said he was absent for medical treatment.

We understand from our sources that in November the head of SBP HSE left the country in a hurry and did not return.

Now we learn that a number of fraud investigations are going on, allegedly involving Nigerian expats. read more

She was a former air hostess who married the world’s richest man.

But when the Sultan of Brunei divorced Mariam Aziz after two decades together – replacing her with a glamorous television reporter 32 years his junior – she was left wondering where life would take her.

Unfortunately, she looked for the answers from a fortune teller she met in a London casino.

Three-and-a-half years later, after the most “bizarre” series of court cases, Mrs Aziz and five of the country’s most senior judges are still scratching their heads at what happened next. read more

Once their long working day is over, the rival teams of British lawyers play golf, tennis and badminton in the palatial surroundings of their five-star hotel.

After exercising, they can swim in one of the Empire Hotel and Country Club’s eight luxurious pools.

Each morning, at around 8.15am, the 10 barristers and solicitors, together with three appeal court judges, have been taken by a fleet of chauffeur-driven black BMWs and Mercedes from their hotel, nestling beside the South China Sea, to Brunei’s High Court of Justice 15 minutes away. read more

The Sultan of Brunei, once the world’s richest man, has taken a former newsreader 32 years his junior as his second wife, reports said yesterday.

Family members and close friends were the only people to attend the wedding of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, 58, and his 26-year-old bride, Azrinaz Mazhar Hakim, in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, the New Straits Times said.

Azrinaz was educated in Malaysia and worked as a television reporter and newsreader until leaving her station three months ago, saying she wanted to “venture into other undertakings”. read more

TellShell: Should Shell sue The Independent newspaper for libel?

TellShell: Should Shell sue The Independent newspaper for libel?

By Alfred Donovan

Posted 12 Sept 04

I have no wish to monopolise the TellShell forum, but I really must comment on the news report by The Independent newspaper (11 Sept 04) that Shell gave $500,000 towards the cost of the lavish Royal wedding in Brunei. The report states: “The Asian wing of Royal Dutch Shell allegedly bunged in 500,000 Brunei dollars (about pounds 160,000).” The $500,000 gift has also been reported in other newspapers.

“Bunged” of course implies backhander, sweetener, kickback or bribe. If the news report is erroneous and Shell has not in fact “bunged in $500,000” towards the costs of the Royal marriage, will Shell be suing The Independent for libel? read more

Royal wedding in Brunei: Shell allegedly bunged in 500,000 Brunei dollars

The Independent: btw: “The royal wedding in Brunei was quite a spectacle”: “The Asian wing of Royal Dutch Shell allegedly bunged in 500,000 Brunei dollars (about pounds 160,000)”

JOHN WALSH

Sep 11, 2004

The royal wedding in Brunei was quite a spectacle (the one-ton chandeliers each the size of the mother ship in Close Encounters of the Third Kind; the happy couple’s matching his’n’hers blue brocade outfits; the bride’s bouquet of diamonds and gold; the elderly, black-clad crones of honour), but what is really interesting is the rumour that the event was sponsored. Not by Hello! magazine (puh-lease – we are not Anthea Turner), but by local businesses. read more

The $5m Brunei royal wedding

The Independent: The $5m royal wedding

“…sponsored by local companies, including the oil and gas firms Brunei Shell…”: “the royal family itself was hit by a major financial scandal surrounding the Sultan’s brother, Prince Jefri…”

Three weeks of celebrations, a guest list that included princes and world leaders, and a 21-gun salute. Jonathan Este reports on the marriage of the Crown Prince of Brunei

10 September 2004

The future king of Brunei married his teenage bride yesterday following two weeks of pre-nuptial celebrations. The lavish ceremonials are scheduled to last for a further three days and reportedly cost the royal family $5m (£2.8m), but this is considered remarkably restrained by the opulent standards of celebrations in the oil-rich Sultanate. read more
