Financial Times: Mudlark: It’s a Shell of a tale

“some shareholders have asked what Moody-Stuart, who remains a non-executive director at Shell, was doing while the reserves debacle was unfolding.”

By Clay Harris

Just when you thought no more surprises could emerge from Royal Dutch/Shell, there comes a curious tale.

According to whispers that have emerged in recent days, Walter van de Vijver, deposed head of exploration and production, was mulling the possibility of a move to Shell’s global rival, BP.

An incriminating message, it is said, was found in his Shell e-mail account after he was sacked in March. Could he even have had ambitions to succeed Lord Browne?

That would be rather odd. Before his downfall, van de Vijver was seen at Shell as having farther to rise; he was a frontrunner eventually to succeed Sir Philip Watts, who also lost his job in March. read more

Moody-Stuart talks

Financial Times: Moody-Stuart talks: ‘said yesterday he felt “a sense of responsibility” for what had happened’

By Clay Harris

Jul 15, 2004

It was with a delicious sense of irony that Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, former head of Royal Dutch/Shell, yesterday lectured attendees at a Chatham House conference on corporate citizenship about the need for strong governance.

Moody-Stuart, in charge at the Dutch-UK energy group at a time when its oil reserves were being overbooked, was specifically addressing the “absolutely vital” need for sound governance in developing countries. He later said Shell’s drive to improve its own, less-than-spotless governance record at head office would provide a useful blueprint for operations in countries such as Nigeria. read more

Investors snub Shell in vote on liability

The Times: Investors snub Shell in vote on liability

“Pointing to Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, a former chairman of Shell’s CMD who sits on the Shell Transport board, Mr Pal said: “When this scandal came up, Sir Mark was present. Why did he allow this departure from Shell’s business principles? He should resign from all his other directorships.”

SHELL’S directors yesterday suffered a humiliating rebuff in the Netherlands when investors in Royal Dutch Petroleum, representing almost 40 per cent of the Dutch holding company’s shares, voted against discharging the directors from liability.

The annual resolution to discharge managing directors and supervisory board directors is normally a formality at Royal Dutch meetings, but a number of Dutch pension funds yesterday took the chance to express anger over the misreporting of 4.5 billion barrels of oil and gas reserves. read more

Transport doesn’t come much greener than that

Daily Telegraph: Transport doesn’t come much greener than that

At the Hay Festival last weekend Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, the Anglo American chairman and former Shell boss, appeared on a debating panel. The discussion was entitled “Is this the End of the Oil Age?” and all the guests were eager to display their green credentials to the assembled tree-huggers. One questioner asked each panellist how they had travelled to the festival and Moody-Stuart explained he’d come in his car.

“It’s a Toyota,” he said, before adding: “And it’s powered by a hydrogen cell.” The audience seemed impressed until Moody-Stuart’s fellow panellist, one of those dreary Greenpeace representatives, blew him out of the water. He’d arrived by canoe. read more

LETTER TO MARK MOODY STUART FROM RETIRED POLICE OFFICER, PAT BRADSHAW: 12 AUGUST 1998

Mr Mark Moody-Stuart
Shell Centre

Dear Mr Moody-Stuart

Shell, Syon Hill and Shell, Roehampton

The reason for writing to you direct is to request your intervention in the above matter.

A summary of the circumstances is as follows:

Having successfully operated the site at Syon Hill for some years, I was telephoned by Mike Garrett (the area manager for City) late on a Friday afternoon in January 1995 and asked if I would take over the operation at Roehampton Lane for a short period until a replacement operator could be found. 1 was assured that this would be a temporary position. I asked for the weekend to think about this proposition and to discuss this with my wife but was told that an answer was necessary within two hours. Dealing with such a large company such as Shell, it did not cross my mind that anything could possibly be dishonest about their predicament. read more
